  • The Iranian regime detained eight more Kurdish activists in its ongoing campaign against Kurdish political rights. In Javanrud (Jwanro), Iranian authorities arrested a Kurdish man named Hussein Mirzie on Saturday. In Sardasht, Iranian security forces arrested a Christian Kurd named Sherko Saweshi and a second Christian Kurd from Sardasht named Mehdi Ibrahimzada in Fars Province. Iranian authorities also arrested four more Kurds from Sardasht on Thursday and accused them of “aiding Kurdish opposition parties.” Meanwhile, the Kurdistan Human Rights Association (KMMK) reported unknown Iranian officials abducted a 35-year-old Kurdish man named Khabat Kafakhari in Sanandaj. Makhiri was previously contacted by several Iranian security services. Finally, Iranian authorities arrested two Kurds from Marivan, Nawshiran Razaiie and Farzad Muradi, and another from Baneh named Shareif Amini.
  • Iranian authorities injured eight Kurdish border porters (Kolbars) last week. Last Tuesday, Iranian border guards wounded a 50-year-old Kolbar named Jafaar Ramazani in Kermanshah Governorate’s Nowsud town. Iranian border guards then ambushed and severely wounded three more Kolbars in the same area on Wednesday. Concurrently, Iranian security forces injured a total of four Kolbars in Chaldaron, Piranshahr, and Sardasht. Finally, Iranian authorities arrested three local businessmen, 31-year-old Sohaib Kawa, 30-year-old Rebwar Arazhangi, and 25-year-old Mohammed Arazhangi, who were involved with Kolbar activities in Marivan

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : Es geht nicht um die Maske, es geht um die Lüge

Als am vergangenen Samstag die Hubschrauber über der Corona-Demonstration kreisten, haben sie sicherlich auch eines jener schlauen optischen Geräte an Bord gehabt, die Gesichter erkennen und damit die Größe einer Menschenmenge recht zuverlässig ermitteln können. Den verantwortlichen Politikern dürfte die Kopfzahl der Demonstranten mittlerweile bekannt sein. Und sie wird ihnen nicht gefallen. Aber es ist nicht nur die schiere Masse der Menschen, die ihnen Kopfzerbrechen bereiten müsste, sondern auch ihre Zusammensetzung.

Vor ihren Augen entsteht hier etwas Neues und etwas Merkwürdiges, das man mit dem bisherigen Mittel der Stigmatisierung auf Dauer nicht aufhalten wird. Wenn sich innerhalb des Parlamentes keine schlagkräftige Opposition mehr artikulieren kann, wird dies eben außerhalb des Parlamentes geschehen. Und da man offenbar nicht bereit ist, diesen politischen Kardinalfehler zu korrigieren, wird man den Weg bis zum bitteren Ende gehen müssen.

So ähnlich wie ein Fluss, den man aufstaut, sich einen neuen Weg sucht, wird sich auch die Unzufriedenheit mit der gegenwärtigen Politik mäandernd durchs Land bewegen und unterwegs immer mehr an Momentum gewinnen.

Wer gäbe heute noch sein Leben für eine andere Meinung? Eine intellektuelle Bewegung widersetzt sich der Cancel Culture und streitet für einen offenen Diskurs. Allerdings gibt es auch politisch giftige Meinungsträger darunter.

Ein Journalist schreibt eine Reportage. Er kommt aus dem Osten und arbeitet für die Seite drei der „Süddeutschen Zeitung“. In dem Text geht es um zwei zu Unrecht verurteilte Rechtsradikale. Einer von ihnen saß vier Jahre in Haft, bevor sich seine Unschuld herausstellte. Der Richter der ersten Instanz habe unter erheblichem öffentlichen Druck gestanden, schreibt der Autor. Er heißt Birk Meinhardt und war in seinem früheren Leben Sportjournalist der „Wochenpost“, einer der auflagenstärksten Wochenzeitungen der DDR. Dort gab es Zensur und Haltungsvorgaben. Als die Chefredaktion der „Süddeutschen“ seine Reportage nicht drucken will, weil Neonazis sie als Beweis für ihre Unschuld werten und für ihre Zwecke ausnutzen könnten, muss er sich an Zeiten erinnert gefühlt haben, in denen unbequeme Wahrheiten unterdrückt wurden, weil sie dem „Klassenfeind“ nützen könnten. 2017 hat er „seine Zeitung“ verlassen und jetzt ein Buch über seine Erfahrungen veröffentlicht (Birk Meinhardt: „Wie ich meine Zeitung verlor“. Ein Jahrebuch. Das neue Berlin, 144 Seiten, 15 Euro). Die SZ-Chefredaktion rechtfertigt ihr Vorgehen im Rückblick mit Verweisen auf eine angeblich unklare Quellenlage in dem Artikel.

The American political philosopher Francis Fukuyama has become, perhaps unfairly, something of a punchline in recent years. Written immediately after the fall of the Soviet Union, when global pre-eminence was unexpectedly thrust upon the United States, his National Interest essay The End of History?, later elaborated into a bestselling book, has become a shorthand for liberal hubris. Its central argument, that liberal democracy had essentially won the battle of ideologies and that the arc of history seemed to bend inexorably towards the liberal order, seemed to embody the triumphalist optimism of the 1990s and 2000s, establishing the framework for the politics of the era.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS SENSATIONAL :Hamas, Israel Reach Deal to Stop Violence

 

 
1 Sept 2020 – The Palestinian militant group Hamas announced it reached a Qatar-brokered deal with Israel to end a monthlong spike in hostilities. Hamas had for weeks launched (NYT) incendiary balloons and rockets into Israel, while Israel struck Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip. Israel said it would reopen (TOI) Gaza’s fishing zone and border crossings.
Saudi Arabia: King Salman sacked two royal family members, who will join (BBC) four other officials facing a corruption probe. Critics say Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the country’s de facto ruler, has used an anti-graft campaign to consolidate power.

Am Namen der Hof-Apotheke Zum Mohren in Friedberg scheiden sich weiter die Geister. Die Inhaberin ruft nun den Rathauschef als Schlichter zu Hilfe. Viele Bürger haben derweil schon eine klare Meinung im Namensstreit.

Kommt Bewegung in die Gespräche zwischen der „Hof-Apotheke zum Mohren“ und den Namens-Kritikern? Zumindest bittet Konrad Dörner, Rechtsbeistand von Apothekerin Kerstin Podszus, Bürgermeister Dirk Antkowiak um Hilfe. Er soll ein Gespräch zwischen seiner Mandantin und den Gegnern des Namens moderieren.

  • The August 2020 visit to Washington of Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi marked the evolution of the U.S.-Iraq relationship into a long-term economic and security partnership.
  • The Trump administration will not commit to using U.S. forces to help the Kadhimi government rein in Iran-backed militias.
As of late August, a number of indicators collectively suggest that the Trump administration no longer considers exercising preponderant influence in Iraq to be a top priority. The Trump administration has viewed the U.S. role in Iraq as a key tool in its campaign of ‘maximum pressure’ to weaken Iran and roll back its regional influence. Yet, despite keeping over 5,000 U.S. troops at various Iraqi bases, Iran-backed forces have repeatedly attacked U.S. forces, sometimes killing U.S. and allied military personnel and damaging the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Baghdad airport, and other locations. When they have been undertaken, U.S. retaliation and Iraqi military operations against the militias have caused them to stand down, but the groups have always resumed their attacks after a brief period of quiescence.

In the context of his re-election campaign, President Trump faces a choice between continuing to battle Iran-backed forces and adhering to his promise to reduce U.S. involvement in the region’s ‘endless wars.’ The Trump administration appears to have chosen the latter, as demonstrated during President Trump’s August 20 meeting with visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, as well as subsequent decisions on U.S. troop deployments in Iraq. Answering questions alongside Kadhimi at the White House, President Trump said: ‘So, at some point, [U.S. forces] obviously will be gone [from Iraq]. We’ve brought [U.S. force levels] down to a very, very low level. We deal — where there are attacks [by Iran-backed militias], we take care of those attacks, and we take care of them very easily… In addition to that, Iraq has been very helpful, where necessary. But we have been taking our troops out of Iraq fairly rapidly, and we look forward to the day when we don’t have to be there. And hopefully Iraq can live their own lives and they can defend themselves, which they’ve been doing long before we got involved.’

In the days after the meeting, U.S. officials speaking on background confirmed reports that U.S. force levels would be reduced from the 5,200 in Iraq now to about 3,500 by November 2020. It was also reported that the 2,000 U.S. forces that were deployed at Camp Taji, north of Baghdad, had left that base; some were reportedly sent to the Kurdish-controlled autonomous region of northern Iraq, where Kurdish leaders deny the Shia Arab-dominated, Iran-backed militias the ability to operate. Iran’s semi-official media trumpeted the evacuation of Taji, which has come under repeated Iran-supported militia attacks, as a response to the early 2020 resolution in Iraq’s parliament that U.S. troops be asked to leave Iraq. The commanders of several pro-Iranian factions and militias are prominent in Iraq’s legislative body and from that perch they exert significant pressure on the Kadhimi government. Iran’s leaders calculate that a smaller U.S. military presence will translate into diminished U.S. political influence over Iraqi decision-making, as well as a reduced U.S. capacity to retaliate for Iran-backed attacks.

The Trump administration has sought to portray its decisions not as an abandonment of Iraq, but rather a transition to a long-term security and economic partnership. White House statements surrounding the Kadhimi visit highlighted the signing of energy and other economic agreements designed to reduce Iraq’s energy dependence on Iran, and on helping Iraq conduct free and fair early elections in 2021. President Trump and other U.S. officials commented during the Kadhimi visit that the United States would move to a train, equip, and advise role and would not necessarily conduct sustained operations against Iran-backed militia forces or remnants of the Islamic State organization. In that context, the U.S. troop drawdown puts remaining U.S. forces in a precarious position insofar as militia forces might increase their attacks on U.S. troops with less fear of U.S. retaliation. U.S. officials express confidence in the ability of Iraqi forces, particularly the Iraqi Counterterrorism Service, to deter or defeat militia attacks without direct U.S. backing. But the performance of Iraqi forces during the Islamic State offensive in 2014 gives cause to be concerned about Iraq’s ability to hold off a determined military challenge on its own.
