Iraqi security forces began direct operations to liberate Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province, from the Islamic State (IS) the morning of October 17. Kurdish peshmerga forces, which controlled much of the area east and north of Mosul before 2014, began taking a series of villages east of the city. They are accompanied by the elite Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS), with the Iraqi army’s newly created, U.S.-trained Fifteenth Division making up the core of the assault force in the city proper. Putin’s forceful strategy of internal military reforms, wide-ranging naval deployments, foreign interventions, and formidable A2AD bubbles has seemingly solidified Russia’s presence in the region for the long term, which could complicate U.S. freedom of maneuver.
On October 15, the Russian Navy deployed its only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, to the Eastern Mediterranean. According to IHS Jane’s, the carrier is accompanied by “the battlecruiser Pyotr Velikiy, large anti-submarine ships Severomorsk and Vice Admiral Kulakov, and support vessels.” Russian officials had first announced the plan on September 21, noting that the Kuznetsov would be used to strike targets in Syria. - On October 17, The Council of Europe called for restoring the immunity of members of parliament, which was infringed by an amendment. In its report, the Venice Commission says that the constitutional amendment of 12 April was “a misuse of the constitutional amendment procedure.” In the current situation in Turkey, parliamentary inviolability is an essential guarantee for the functioning of parliament; the current status in the Turkish Judiciary makes this the worst possible moment to abolish inviolability. - Durig, an official visit to Greece, Salih Muslim, the Co-president of the Democratic Union PARTY (PYD) held meetings with each of the Greek Prime Minister, Minister of Forgrin Affairs, and Minister of Interior. According to a statement by PYD the Greek sides stressed support for the Kurdish case. Muslim gave remarks during a conference of the ruling party (SYRIZA).
- In results of clashes in between ISIS and Islamic rebel groups in Shahba area (Northern Aleppo) 3000 displaced people arrived at Afrin Canton. According to Rojava and Northern Syria officials, Internally Displaced People (IDP) numbers has mainly increased to Afrin due to the clashes between Turkish-backed Islamists and ISIS since August 2016. The long-awaited assault on the extremist group’s last major Iraqi stronghold began Monday with rapid advances, including by a contingent of Kurdish fighters who stormed nine nearby villages in the first phase of the effort to retake Iraq’s second-largest city. The pace slowed Tuesday as the Kurdish fighters, known as Peshmerga, consolidated their gains and prepared for the next push.They also criticized their partners in the Iraqi military. – “The Iraqi army hasn’t moved even a bit,” said the Peshmerga’s Gen.
