Brussels terror attacks cost Belgian economy almost €1 billion: report – Hotels, stores lost revenue after attacks that killed 32 in March.
By Cynthia Kroet – 7/26/16, 8:40 AM CET – The Belgian economy lost close to €1 billion as a result of the March 22 Brussels terror attacks, according to a new report, local media reports.
An economic impact report commissioned by the government suggests Brussels’ tourism and shopping industries were hit hardest in the aftermath of the attacks, newspaper De Morgen wrote Tuesday. The Belgian capital recorded a €122.5 million drop in sales in the second quarter of this year, compared to the first months of 2016. Belgian Finance Minister Johan Van Overtveldt earlier estimated a decrease in federal tax revenues of €760 million, which represents about 0.1 percent of GDP, bringing the total loss to nearly €1 billion. www.mesop.de

The medical facilities are all located in the al-Shaar district. Some treated injured rebels, but those which do not — including the children’s and women’s hospitals — were targeted.“In the past three months, every single hospital in [east] Aleppo has been bombed at least once,” said Abdelbasset Ibrahim, director of the Free Aleppo Health DirectorateHe said two hospitals have sustained “irreparable” structural damage and “could collapse at any moment”, while others have stopped housing inpatients fearing further attacks. Two bombs struck a Kurdish security headquarters and a government building in Qamishli, Syria, this morning, killing at least 50 people. This crisis was reiterated by the June 28 Istanbul airport attack, in which 45 people were killed and over 250 others injured. The perpetrators were IS members of Russian and Central Asian origin, highlighting the manner in which Turkey has become not just a target country for the group, but also a source country for jihadists and terrorists. The Turkish government issued another public call for the United States to immediately extradite Fethullah Gulen, the cleric the government accuses of masterminding the recent failed coup. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu wrote in an editorial for Al-Jazeera that “Turkish people are appalled at the US’ insistence in harboring him” and that the extradition ruling “may shape the future relations” of the United States and Turkey. Clashes between Iranian security forces and Kurdish insurgents have escalated in northwestern Iran, with the Revolutionary Guards claiming the killing of 23 fighters.
Brig. Gen. Majid Arjamand Far, the deputy commander of the Guards operational headquarters in the northwest, said the insurgents were slain in the Kurdistan and West Azerbaijan provinces.
