MESOP NEWS REFLECTION : Ankara may be counting on US-Russian rivalry in Syria
By Semih Idiz – Al Monitor – 12 July 2017 – The Syrian crisis has taken many unexpected turns since 2011. The involvement of local and global powers has not only complicated matters but also produced unwanted results for neighboring countries such as Turkey and Iraq.Unable to make its own mark, Ankara continues to vacillate between Moscow and Washington in an apparent effort to secure support to roll back gains by Syrian Kurds it considers terrorists.
Ankara, whose own involvement in the crisis is marked mostly by failures due to a series of miscalculations, has found itself forced to engage in delicate balancing acts with the principal players in the crisis.Turkey has vacillated between the United States and Russia in an attempt to bolster its weak position in Syria. This approach has also been predicated on US-Russian ties being strained — as they were recently after the United States downed a Syrian fighter jet.

MESOP NEWS COMMENTARIES BY THE GUARDIAN UK FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF THE COUP IN TURKEY
ONE YEAR ON FROM THE FAILED COUP, RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN IS MORE AUTOCRATIC THAN EVER
by Soner Cagaptay – Guardian – July 8, 2017
The Turkish president is taking steps to end democracy itself in Turkey, further polarizing an already sharply divided country.
This week is the first anniversary of the failed coup against Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a coup he has used since to further alienate his opponents. Most recently, on 16 April, he won a referendum to become head of state and head of government simultaneously, emerging as the most unassailable Turkish politician since Mustafa Kemal Ataturk established the secular republic in 1923.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Ataturk shaped Turkey in his own image as a western society. In his Turkey, the state banished religion to the private sphere and discriminated against pious citizens. But since 2003, Erdogan has dismantled Ataturk’s societal model, flooding political and education systems with rigidly conservative Islam, as well as pivoting Turkey away from Europe and the west.

MESOP NEWS CULTURE : Erdogan’s “Language Revolution” Epitomizes His Anti-Western & Cultural Islamism

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: In deeply polarized Turkey, words are not just words. It has been part of Erdoğan’s campaign to make Turkey more Islamic and more Turkish. In his view, this entails ridding the Turkish language of “foreign” words – but foreign, to Erdoğan, does not include Arabic.
What’s in a name? A good deal. You would risk offending a Turk if you called his country’s biggest city “Constantinople” instead of “Istanbul.” Your Turkish friend would probably not know that the word “Istanbul” morphed from “Eis tin Polin,” which means “to the city” – in Greek.
