MESOP TODAYS HEADLINE : GREAT ARTICLE BY OUR FRIEND SHERI LAIZER
Kurdish Conscripts Confront Impossible Odds In Turkey
Sheri Laizer in France – | Special to Ekurd.net – 1 March 2016 – While the PKK and PYD/YPG fighters officially constitute the main targets of the Turkish military, the pro-Kurdish lobby is also under fire.
Commentators, including myself, forecast a deepening crisis in Turkey and the wider Kurdish region – unless ‘peace’ talks resume and the sustained assault on the pro-Kurdish HDP’s members and supporters cease. Conversely, the Turkish government appears to have little will to backtrack to the sunnier climes of diplomacy and instead emphasises intensified military action. MESOP : A POLITICAL ANATOMY OF PYD
The Chameleons of Rojava / The stalinist PKK/PYD Threat in Middle east
By Ben DAVIS : Fledgling journalist, analyst, former filmmaker in Syria (2013). Writing predominantly about the Middle East. Twitter: @benad36
The recent exploitation of the collapse of the rebel front line in Aleppo by the PYD’s armed wing (YPG) and its allies in the Syrian Democratic Forces took some observers by surprise. Having been praised by many (including Syrian revolution supporters) for determined resistance to the Da’esh juggernaut, the YPG became a pariah almost overnight for attackingevery rebel group in Aleppo in its bid to grab as much territory as possible before the regime got there first. Clockwise from left: former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, the graves of his Kurdish victims in Halabja, and the graves of American soldiers who gave their lives attempting to build a better future for Iraq.Remember when Sean Penn went to Iraq in December of 2002 in a bizarre attempt to meet with Saddam Hussein and prevent the inevitable U.S.-led invasion? Upon returning home, the activist/actor told Americans they were being lied to and that Iraq was “a happy place. They had flowery meadows and rainbow skies, and rivers made of chocolate, where the children danced and laughed and played with gumdrop smiles.” Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=71722
MESOP TODAYS OPINION BY ARON LUND
Syria’s Cessation of Hostilities: How Does It Work and How are Factions Reacting?
RON LUND – FEBRUARY 29, 2016 – Carnegie Endowment – At midnight on February 27, the guns fell silent in Syria—at least temporarily. With numerous allegations of breaches beginning to surface, Syria’s ceasefire is already on shaky ground. This cessation of hostilities, as it is formally called, followed two weeks of intensive negotiations between the United States and Russia. Just before the clock struck twelve, their efforts reached fruition when the UN Security Council unanimously approved resolution 2268, endorsing a Russian-American agreement from February 22 and demanding that Syrian and international actors comply. – But will they? – Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=71724
MESOP : THE EU INSTITUTIONS – ALWAYS UNITED WHEN IT GOES CONTRA GERMANY
EU Court Rejects German Refugee Policy
The European Court of Justice ruled Tuesday that the German practice of restricting the areas in which refugees can live is a violation of European Union rules (FT) on freedom of movement. The ruling deals a blow to Chancellor Angela Merkel’s efforts to manage the flow of the more than one million asylum seekers that arrived in 2015. www.mesop.de

MESOP “MUSINGS ON IRAQ” BY JOEL WING – Islamic State Finding New Funding In Iraq & Syria
29 Feb 2016 07:13 AM PST – Despite bombings and financial sanctions the Islamic State is still coming up with ways to bring in cash. The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times just documented IS’s deals with Iraqi money exchangers and Syrian oil traders to keep money flowing into the caliphate. It’s yet to be seen whether that’s enough to sustain itself, but it shows that it will still take a lot more to cut off the group’s sources of funding. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=71707
