MESOP : CANADIAN PLAIN TRUTH / THE OTTAWA CITIZEN

“Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has been reduced to working as an errand boy for Vladimir Putin, instructing Syria’s rebel forces on what they may and may not put on the table in the latest United Nations’ “peace talks” charade, and making plain to everyone that Obama and Iranian president Hassan Rouhani are on the same page: forget about sending Assad to the International Criminal Court”. http://www.mesop.de/?p=70622

MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY SONER CAGAPTEY / KEMAL ERDOGAN’S SECOND TURKISH REVOLUTION

By Soner Cagaptay – Politico – January 27, 2016 – The Turkish leader seems intent on uprooting the Ottoman legacy and restoring Islam’s central role.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is all but certain to become the longest serving Turkish leader in modern history, surpassing even Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The founder of modern Turkey ruled the country for 15 years between 1923 and 1938. By the time he finishes his current term, Erdogan will have run Turkey for 17 years, as prime minister between 2002 and 2014 and as president until 2019.

Erdogan is often cast as an Ottoman revivalist. His critics suggest he wants to do away with the legacy and policies of Ataturk, who established Turkey as a modern secular republic in the 1920s, and bring back the Ottoman Empire in its place. But Erdogan’s agenda goes deeper: He wants to rid Turkey not only of the legacy of Ataturk, but also of the late, westernized Ottoman Empire.Often portrayed as a standalone revolutionary leader, Ataturk is really a product of the Ottoman Empire. He was educated in Ottoman schools and served in the Ottoman military. Read more http://www.mesop.de/?p=70612

MESOP TODAYS OPINION BY OUR FRIEND SHERI LAIZER

For Sale: Iraqi Kurdistan, a Nation & Its Values

Sheri Laizer in France – | Special to Ekurd.net – 28 Jan 2016 – Iraqi Kurdistan has turned into a chaotic frontier land where the black economy and corruption flourish. Major international players and internal political forces secretly put aside their weapons to agree on how to divide the spoils.

Turkey, Iran, the USA, the Barzanis and other key tribal leaders cut shares in high profits from the revenues of Kurdistan while the peshmerga have not received their wages for the past seven months but are still expected to carry on the battle against ISIS.

Last August (2015), Nechirvan Barzani, Massoud Barzani’s nephew and Prime Minister claimed, “oil exports from Kurdish-controlled fields had reached 600,000 barrels per day (bpd) and could give Kurdistan the much needed $800 million per month to offset the deficit and pay salaries of civil servants in the region.” Despite this, nearly six months on wages are still not being paid and energy supplies depend on family status.1 Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70614

Companies in the Russian defense industry are beginning 2016 with optimism: The contracts in their portfolio exceed $50 billion, and the military campaign in Syria has been excellent advertising for Russian armaments.

MESOP : HNC Spokesman: A ‘Scary Retreat’ In U.S. Position Has Brought It Closer Than Ever To Russia’s, Iran’s Positions

January 27, 2016Special Dispatch No.6280 – Memri – Syrian Opposition On Eve Of Geneva Talks: U.S. Made ‘A Scary Retreat’ From Its Former Position

Indirect talks between the Syrian regime and Syrian opposition are scheduled to commence in Geneva on January 29, 2016. Ahead of these talks, the recently established High Negotiations Committee (HNC),[1] which is charged with nominating the opposition’s delegation to the talks and steering the talks on behalf of the opposition, has been heavily pressured to drop its preconditions for beginning the talks, such as ceasing the bombardment of civilians and lifting the siege from areas in Syria. The HNC is also under pressure to comply with Russian demands to change the makeup of the opposition delegation and allow the participation of oppositionists who are close to Russia and moderate in their positions vis-à-vis the Syrian regime, such as Qadri Jamil and Haytham Manna’. MESOP : THE PUTIN/OBAMA BACKED REGIME – Assad Regime Did Not Respond to Majority of Aid Requests

The need for humanitarian aid in Syria has drastically increased over the past year, but the Assad regime has failed to respond to requests to deliver aid in a large majority of instances, U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Stephen O’Brien told the U.N. Security Council yesterday. Of 113 requests from the United Nations to provide inter-agency aid convoys, only 10 percent were allowed to reach their destination; the regime granted preliminary permission to another 10 percent of requests, but they were not granted final approval or could not proceed due to security concerns. In 75 percent of cases, the regime did not respond to aid requests. The U.N. assessment of the number of people in need of aid in Syria grew to 13.5 million in 2015, up from 1.3 million in 2014.

O’Brien’s presentation comes ahead of peace talks that could begin as soon as tomorrow. The opposition High Negotiations Committee has still not reached a decision about whether it will participate, but reiterated its conditions for participating yesterday. www.mesop.de
