A recent Foreign Policy article argued against holding the Sykes-Picot agreement accountable for the current turmoil in the Middle East. While the author may have gone too far in absolving the treaty and its signatories from all blame, it is certainly true that the borders this document ultimately helped develop are hardly the only culprit behind the region’s instability. The use of Sykes-Picot as a scapegoat has created a much more dangerous notion; it has opened the call for redrawn borders to build new mono-nationalist states on the European model. MESOP OVERVIEW : ISIS Collapses Opposition Frontline in Northern Aleppo Province

The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) has mounted a major offensive against opposition groups in Northern Aleppo Province over the past week, threatening the total collapse of the last pocket of opposition-held terrain along the Syrian-Turkish Border. ISIS seized at least six villages in Northern Aleppo Province on May 27, besieging the critical opposition stronghold of Mare’a and entering the outskirts of the border town of Azaz. ISIS later entered the town of Mare’a on May 28 under the cover of up to nine Suicide Vehicle-Borne Improved Explosive Device (SVBIED) detonations before withdrawing in the face of heavy resistance from the opposition. The rate and breadth of Russian airstrikes nearly tripled from May 29 – June 2 in comparison to the previous five day period. ISW was able to assess a total of 29 Russian airstrikes with low and high confidence beginning on May 29 and only 10 locations from May 24 -28. This escalation marks a dangerous shift in the Russian airstrike pattern to levels only seen prior to the brokering of the Cessation of Hostilities agreement in late February 2016. Soran Karim – Bas News – 4 June 2016 – MOSUL — Abubakir Al-Baghdadi, the Leader of the Islamic State (IS), has reportedly ordered his group to withdraw from Iraq and move to some other countries. – According to the president of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq, Ammar al-Hakim, the Iraqi forces have obtained a letter signed by Baghdadi which was supposed to be received by his men in Iraq.Hakim revealed that in the letter, Baghdadi orders the jihadists in Iraq to gradually withdraw from Iraq, and move to other countries.Hakim also urged the Iraqi government to prepare a prior plan for the post-IS era as the extremist group is realizing its failure in the country. “This is the beginning of the end of IS in Iraq,” he claimed.
