Referendum on Kurdish Independence “Possible in 2016”: KRG Envoy to US – Kirkuk will one day join Kurdistan, Bayan Sami Abdulrahamn says

Sardar Sattar – 4 Juni 2016 – BasNews – ERBIL — A referendum on Kurdish independence from Iraq is possible in the current year, says Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representative to the US.

Bayan Sami Abulrahman, the Kurdish envoy in the United States, told the Russian Sputnik that there is no specific date, but yet it is possible to hold a referendum on Kurdish independence in the upcoming months. “If it does not happen in 2016, it’s not the end of the world, a referendum is a referendum,” says Abdulrahman. “I have to say though, there are many in Kurdistan who ask why do we need a referendum when its obvious to everybody in Iraq and the entire world that the majority would vote “yes” to independence.”

Concerning the oil-rich province of Kirkuk in northern Iraq, the Kurdish official insists that Kirkuk will one day joins Kurdistan “whether it’s through a referendum or some other process.””Of course, as a Kurd I believe that Kirkuk is historically, linguistically and culturally part of Kurdistan.” Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani stated earlier in March this year that Kurdistan Region is planning to hold an independence referendum before the US presidential elections in November 2016. www.mesop.de
