Gorran Accuses Iran of Intervening in Iraqi Election in Favour of PUK
BasNews 13/05/2018 – 16:45 – ERBIL – A member of the Change Movement (Gorran) claimed on Sunday that Iran has helped the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Sulaymaniya province in the Iraqi parliamentary election for the party’s withdrawal from Kirkuk in October, last year.
“We are strongly rejecting the election results in Sulaymaniya because we know that PUK could not succeed without the help of Iran,” Adil Aziz, who is also a lawmaker in the Kurdistan Region’s parliament, told BasNews.
“There must have been a secret deal between the pair. Kirkuk was sold to Iran, in exchange of Sulaymaniya,” Aziz added.
He further pointed out that if the Iraqi Independent High Electoral Commission does not address the issue, they will pursue other methods, withdrawing from the political process of Iraq, for instance. All of the sides except the PUK objected on Saturday evening the unofficial results of the election, claiming that the party has violated the process.
In October, last year, Iraqi army in coordination with the Iranian-backed militias of Hashd al-Shaabi entered Kirkuk, Khanaqin, and Tuz Khurmatu in a military incursion. A certain group within the PUK was accused of “collaborating with the Iraqi forces during the assault”. More via www.mesop.de
