Adam Garrie – THE DURAN – 12 Sept 2016 – The recent Russia-US brokered ceasefire was a hard won gesture which in a perfect world would have far reaching consequences for Syria.
In reality, for the people of Syria who are heroically battling on the front line of a war between civilisation and barbarism, the agreement isn’t worth the secretive paper it’s written on. A terrorist called Ali al-Omar who leads the Al-Qaeda affiliate Ahrar Al-Sham (formally Al-Nusra) has rejected the ceasefire and claims his group will continue to wage war. This group continues to receive Saudi funding, has been given arms by Obama, and Hillary Clinton and the US government have vetoed a motion in the UN to proscribe the group as a terrorist organisation in spite of the fact that they are part of Al-Qaeda (the biggest brand in Islamic terrorism before ISIS came along). This fact however segues into the more fundamental reason why the ceasefire is useless. Although Lavrov and Kerry jointly back a cessation to violence, this cannot be meaningful unless both men agree on the origins of the violence. LONDON — Opponents of Jeremy Corbyn, the left-wing leader of Britain’s Labour Party, usually claim one of two things about him: that his politics are extreme and will lead the party to electoral oblivion, or that his values are admirable but he is too incompetent to put them into effect.
These two arguments seem contradictory, but in Mr. Corbyn’s handling of an anti-Semitism scandal that has hung over the Labour Party, they have converged. In April, after months of accusations of anti-Semitism among party members, particularly on social media, Mr. Corbyn ordered an inquiry and asked Shami Chakrabarti, who had just stepped down as the director of Britain’s leading civil liberties organization, Liberty, to head it. US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced the agreement early Saturday for a “genuine reduction of violence”, beginning at sundown and the start of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha. The ceasefire is supposed to allow aid to parts of Syria’s largest city Aleppo and besieged towns.
Since the announcement, Russia and the Assad regime have bombed intensively, especially in northwest Syria. More than 160 people were killed on Saturday, and another 58 died on Sunday, according to the pro-opposition Local Coordination Committees. Both pro-Assad forces and rebels have tried to make gains on the ground.
