23 Aug 2016 – NowMedia – The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a coalition of Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) and a number of ethnically Arab factions, successfully captured the city of Manbij in northern Syria from ISIS on August 12. However, the operation to seize the city, which lasted for 10 weeks and proved to be more difficult than expected, seems to be the easy part compared to future plans. The Manbij offensive was a test run that the US-led coalition hopes to replicate in future operations against Raqqa, ISIS’s de-facto capital in Syria. The SDF’s military’s successes against ISIS in northern Syria have also created tensions between Arabs and Kurds. Kurdish forces have been accused of violations against Arab communities in areas seized from ISIS, which has led to feelings of fear and mistrust among Syrian Arabs about the Kurdish-led SDF alliance. The offensive against the majority Arab city of Manbij was, therefore, designed by the US-led coalition as a potential model to mitigate these ethnic tensions by putting Syrian Arabs in the forefront of fighting and administration of the captured territory. The operation was also an important step in attempting to isolate and weaken ISIS in the area before the big battle expected in Raqqa. 22.08.2016 14:51 BİRGÜN DAİLY – Lebanese daily As-Safir newspaper has recently reported that an aide of MİT (Turkish National Intelligence) chief Hakan Fidan has gone to Damascus in order to hold talks with his Syrian counterparts.
According to the reports of SOL newspaper, while the news piece did not include much details, it mentioned that Rojava had come up during the talks.

August 23 – By Scott Lucas – EAWORLDVIEW -After almost a week of fighting in the northeastern Syrian city of Hasakah, Kurdish forces are close to victory over the regime military and militia, according to local activists.The Kurdish YPG militia and Asayish security forces advanced on Monday in the two remaining districts controlled by President Assad’s troops, Nashwa and Ghweiran. Reports said they had captured the police station and were driving back the regime troops in the remaining “security box”.The Kurdish forces declared the eastern part of Nashwa “liberated” and said clashes were ongoing in the Laylia neighborhood. MESOP : PUTIN’S DECLARATION – Iran Didn’t Kick Us Out of Airbase
23 Aug 2016 – Russia’s Defense Ministry has denied that its warplanes were forced by Tehran to leave an airbase in western Iran after only a week of operations.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed on Monday that Russian bombing of northern Syria from the base in Hamedan Province “had finished for now”. The announcement came after days of criticism inside Iran, particularly from MPs, of the agreement for deployment of Russian Tu22-33M “Backfire” long-range bombers and Su-34 tactical bombers.

Abstract: On July 28, 2016, Jabhat al-Nusra, which had previously identified itself as a branch of al-Qa’ida in Syria, announced the changing of its name to Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (‘Conquest of al-Sham Front’) in a video recording that for the first time revealed the appearance of its leader, Abu Muhammad al-Julani. The nominal decoupling of the organizations was approved and coordinated with al-Qa’ida’s senior leadership and was designed to unify Islamist efforts in Syria and to make it more difficult for the United States and Russia to justify targeting the group.
