Urgent Action Needed as Russian ‘Corridors’ Aim to Cleanse Aleppo

[28 July 2016] The Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee condemns Russia’s proposal to facilitate population transfers from Aleppo.  In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, the Syrian opposition today criticized Russia’s alleged plans to create so-called ‘exit corridors’ to empty besieged Aleppo of its last remaining residents.

28 July 2016 – Many analysts believe Turkey and NATO are on a collision course. One end of their argument hinges on the belief — apparently shared to an extent by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Turkish government — that the United States and NATO played a role in the unsuccessful coup attempt July 15.

Minister of Justice Bekir Bozdag, who heads for Washington soon to try to negotiate the extradition of Fethullah Gulen, the Pennsylvania-based Turkish cleric accused of masterminding the coup, has laid Turkey’s position on the line.

“The US knows Fethullah Gulen carried out this coup. Mr. Obama knows this just as he knows his own name. I am convinced that American intelligence knows it, too. I am convinced the State Department knows it. … Other countries know it, too, because every country has an intelligence agency,” Bozdag insisted during a TV interview. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a presidential decree granting amnesty to all rebels who surrender or free prisoners and Russia says it is working to establish humanitarian corridors to allow civilians and rebels to flee besieged neighborhoods of Aleppo. Human rights advocates expressed concern that the implementation of the decree could be monitored or enforced. The conciliatory rhetoric comes as U.N. Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura works to arrange a new round of peace talks, which he says are expected to begin at the end of August.

July 27, 2016 –  The rise of the Islamic State (IS) and its expansion in Iraqi territory has threatened trade routes between Iran and Iraq, which have thrived over the past decade because Iraqi markets remained mostly open at a time when sanctions closed off other potential markets for Iranian exports. According to Iran’s Trade Promotion Organization (TPO), Tehran’s non-oil exports  to Baghdad—including food, construction materials, and vehicles, among other items—surged from $2.3 billion in 2008 to $6.2 billion in 2015.1 At the same time, the rise of IS has also opened up new opportunities for Iranian traders: Baghdad’s trade and diplomatic relations with its other neighbors have suffered, and Iran’s increased military presence in Iraq promises future commercial rewards. Although the scale and effectiveness of coalition efforts to train and equip the Peshmerga have grown, U.S.-Kurdish ties have yet to change fundamentally.

On July 12, the United States signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) regarding U.S.-Kurdish military cooperation in the next stage of the war against the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as ISIS).

On the Kurdish side, the agreement was signed by acting Minister of Peshmerga Affairs Karim Sinjari, and the U.S. side was represented by Elissa Slotkin, the acting assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. After the agreement the Kurdish leadership met on July 14 with U.S. Central Command commander Gen. Joseph Votel, followed by a visit to Erbil by U.S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter on July 24. 28 July 2016 – MESOP  – Übereinstimmenden Medienberichten zufolge, verdichten sich die Hinweise auf einen Luftangriff der türkischen Armee. Wie der Vereinspräsident Umut Cirkovlu mitteilte, wurde beim Angriff der Fahnenmast des Vereins zerstört. Es ist nach bisherigen Angaben nicht auszuschließen, dass der Angriff aufgrund der Nähe des Fußballvereins zum kurdischstämmigen Volk der Türken, erfolgte.  – Der Stürmer des erfolglosen Vereins aus der Kreisliga, Ali Gol, hatte beim vergangenen Heimspiel gegen den FC Mesopotamien beim 1:3 Anschlusstreffers seines Vereins das Trikot über den Kopf gezogen und dabei unter seinem Trikot die Aufschrift “Free Kurdistan” zum Vorschein gebracht. MESOP : Pro-Erdogan-Kundgebung – Kurden verzichten auf Gegendemonstration in Köln

Rp-online. 28 Juli 2016 – Köln. Die Kurdische Gemeinde Deutschland verzichtet auf eine Gegenkundgebung zu der für Sonntag geplanten Pro-Erdogan-Demonstration in Köln. Zur Demo und bei Protesten gegen Erdogan werden mehr als 15.000 Menschen erwartet.

Die Kurden teilten am Donnerstag mit, dass sie zum einen die Erdogan-Anhänger nicht aufwerten wollen, zum zweiten befürchte man gewalttätige Auseinandersetzungen. Der Generalsekretär der Gemeinde, Cahit Basar, sagte, eine solche Demonstration schade der Integration in Deutschland. Erwartet würden Tausende von Menschen, von denen viele in dritter oder vierter Generation in Deutschland lebten, die sich nun aber mit dem türkischen Präsidenten Recep Tayyip Erdogan solidarisierten. “Dass nun Tausende von Menschen für eine Diktatur auf die Straße gehen, ist schlichtweg nicht nachvollziehbar”, sagte Basar.

Die Veranstalter der Demonstration rechnen laut Polizei mit 15.000 Teilnehmern. In der Türkei gilt nach dem gescheiterten Putschversuch ein Ausnahmezustand. Nach offiziellen Angaben wurden zudem mehr als 13.000 Menschen festgenommen und Zehntausende Staatsbedienstete suspendiert.

Wenn sein Name fällt, gefrieren die Mienen. Alles wird ihm zugetraut, dem führenden Paten der türkischen Unterwelt und dem Oberhaupt der organisierten Kriminalität. Auf seiner Internetseite und im wirklichen Leben lässt sich Sedat Peker von seiner Gefolgschaft mit „Reis” anreden, was wörtlich „der Kopf” heißt, aber der „Führer” bedeutet. Das ist er auch.

Lange hat Sedat Peker auf eigene Rechnung gearbeitet, für seinen Ruf und sein Imperium, er hatte Schutzgelder eingetrieben und Raub angeordnet, hatte genötigt und gemordet. Dafür wurde der 1971 geborene Peker zweimal zu Haftstrafen verurteilt, 1998 und 2007. Jedes Mal kam er überraschend schnell wieder auf freien Fuß. Eine weitere Haftstrafe trat er am 5. August 2013 an. Zehn Jahre sollte er hinter Gitter, weil er Teil eines „Ergenekon” genannten Putschplanes gewesen sein soll, bei dem ein knappes Jahrzehnt zuvor der damalige Ministerpräsident Recep Tayyip Erdogan hätte gestürzt wer-den sollen.
