ALMONITOR  25 July 2016 – / On July 23, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan closed thousands of charities and private schools as he expanded his crackdown in the aftermath of the failed July 15 coup. A restructuring of the military is also in the cards. Kadri Gursel reports that 35% (124 of 358) of the generals and admirals in Turkey’s armed forces (TSK) have been arrested, and that the coup was “widespread” with “nationwide tentacles.” He writes that, except for the Turkish navy, “it would not be an exaggeration to estimate that between one-third and one-half of forces on the ground had joined the uprising at various levels.” Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=76331

A group of plotters of the failed Turkish coup attempt used a WhatsApp group to communicate with each other. Bellingcat has transcribed, translated, and analysed the conversation, thereby cross-referencing the messages with photos, videos, and news reports of the evening, night, and morning of July 15-16.

The transcript is composed of two different sources. The first source is a video which was uploaded to Twitter in the morning of July 16, and appears to show the conversation on the phone of a surrendered, captured, or killed coup plotter. This video revealed the WhatsApp conversation from its start at 21:15 to 22:45. The second source is 21 photos that show the rest of the conversation, has already been transcribed. The photos are courtesy of Al Jazeera Türk’s Selahattin Günday, and we are thankful that he was willing to share them with Bellingcat. 25 July 2016 – MESOP – Russia and the Assad regime continued their war on Syria’s hospitals this weekend, bombing six medical facilities in Aleppo Province within 24 hours. The attacks began on Saturday and continued Sunday. Five field hospitals — four in opposition-held districts of Aleppo city and one in Atareb to the west — were struck, as was a blood bank in the al-Sha’ar district of the city. Ich habe derzeit keine Hinweise, die mich annehmen lassen, dass diese Tätigkeiten des Iran im neuen Jahr eingestellt worden wären.
