Should Gulen face trial for Turkish coup attempt?
19 July 2016 – Who was behind Turkey’s bloody coup attempt, which cost more than 160 lives, saw the nation’s parliament bombed and brought the country to the brink of brutal military rule for the first time since 1983?
Since the first moment of the coup attempt, the government pointed to the Fethullah Gulen community, an Islamic sect with a clandestine network within the Turkish state. No wonder the coup plot was followed by a massive crackdown on “Gulenists,” as they are called, within the military, judiciary, police and other institutions. Many observers in the West, however, seem quite reluctant to accept that the Gulenists had anything to do with the coup, saying that there is no evidence. ANKARA – Hurriyet – 19 July 2016 – Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MİT) informed the country’s top generals hours before the coup attempt was initiated by a group of soldiers within the army on July 15, while Chief of General Staff Gen. Hulusi Akar evaluated the information and issued all necessary warnings and orders against “this despicable and miserable attempt,” according to a statement published on the General Staff’s official website on July 19. Beginning the statement by announcing that the attempts of the “terrorist traitors who are members of an illegal gang [the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization – FETÖ] and who have nestled into the Turkish Armed Forces [TSK]” had been suppressed as of July 17 at 4:00 p.m. throughout the country, the General Staff continued by denouncing any relation between this group and the “flag-loving, overwhelming majority” within the army. Was seine Ansichten zu Recep Tayyip Erdogan betrifft, hat Soli Özel eine für türkische Intellektuelle typische Entwicklung hinter sich: Noch vor einigen Jahren wäre Özel, der Politikwissen-schaft an der Kadir-Has-Universität in Istanbul lehrt und zu den bekanntesten Publizisten der Türkei gehört, durchaus ein-verstanden gewesen, wenn man ihn als Anhänger Erdogans bezeichnet hätte. Die innenpolitischen Reformen aus Erdogans erster Legislaturperiode als Ministerpräsident, die Offnung der Außenpolitik, das Zugehen auf die Kurden — wie viele andere kritische Geister in der Türkei begrüßte Özel all das. Doch er wirft längst einen distanzierteren, skeptischeren Blick auf den türkischen Führer. Anders als die reflexhaften Erdogan-Gegner, die alles, was der Staatspräsident sagt und tut, nur deshalb ablehnen, weil er es sagt und tut, hat sich Özel dabei aber Augenmaß bewahrt.
