MESOP NEWS TODAYS OPINION : Ankara & Washington –  Can “Yes” on Syria Be Achieved?

By Frederic C. Hof –  Frederic C. Hof is director of the Atlantic Council’s Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East.

15 May 2017 – ATLANTIC COUNCIL – The visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the White House offers an opportunity for two NATO allies to get to “Yes” on Syria. It is important that they do so. Yet as matters now stand it is doubtful that they will, and each side bears responsibility for a bilateral split that is entirely gratuitous and needlessly damaging. Yet Presidents Trump and Erdogan have it in their power to elevate their alliance over lesser considerations that divide them. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85804

MESOP LATEST NEWS FROM US CAPITOL HILL – EXPECTING ERDOGAN

16 May 2017 – Rep. Deutch Criticizes Erdogan ahead of Visit: Last week, Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL), Ranking Member of the House Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, released a statement strongly criticizing Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan ahead of this week’s meeting with President Donald Trump. Deutch said, “Erdogan has been consolidating his power through flawed elections, arresting those who disagree with him, shutting down social media sites, and attacking the free press. Hosting President Erdogan at the White House sends exactly the wrong message, and I urge the President to cancel their scheduled meeting.”  Read full text Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85786

MESOP NEWS TODAYS CENTRAL COMMENTARY : THE SULTAN IN WASHINGTON

Why the Turkish president’s biography should tell Trump everything he needs to know

By Soner Cagaptay May 12 – Soner Cagaptay is a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy and author of “The New Sultan: Erdogan and the Crisis of Modern Turkey.”

Several recent analyses depict Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is set to meet with President Trump in the White House on Tuesday, as a once moderate and liberal politician who suddenly swerved away toward authoritarianism. I could not disagree more. Erdogan, who has run Turkey since 2002 either as prime minister or president, was always bent on subverting Turkey’s secularist democratic system. Those commentators who supported Erdogan’s alleged earlier liberalism now find themselves struggling hard to explain his more recent authoritarian turn. They were deluding themselves, and they would have known better had they paid more attention to Erdogan’s biography and mind-set. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=85790

MESOP  NEWS PORTRAIT : APO OECALAN’S OLD FASHIONED COMMUNE IN 21th CENTURY

THE KURDISH PATH TO SOCIALISM IN SYRIA

By Fabrice Balanche – PolicyWatch 2802 – May 16, 2017 –  Fabrice Balanche, an associate professor and research director at the University of Lyon 2, is a visiting fellow at The Washington Institute.

To maintain its dominant position and stay true to its ideological roots, the PYD is pushing socialist policies on a skeptical Rojava populace, with uncertain consequences for the future of the Syrian Kurdish zone.

In northern Syria, the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) aims to promote a political and economic system based on self-sufficiency and local democracy. Yet a closer look at the measures being implemented reveals a clear effort to apply the anti-capitalist ideology of Abdullah Ocalan, leader of the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK). It remains unclear whether this ideology is compatible with local economic conditions, however, and Kurdish authorities might resort to full normalization with the Assad regime instead if key stakeholders resist.

MESOP NEWS DOCUMENTS : Memo Signed By Assad Transfers Command And Financial Responsibility For Syrian Militias To Iran

MEMRI May 15, 2017 – Special Dispatch – No.6925 – Throughout the Syria war, Iran has played a central role in establishing the Syrian militias operating alongside the Syrian regime’s regular army and army reserves. These militias are modeled after the Iranian Basij.[1] Recently, a memo was circulated on Facebook ostensibly proving that the Syrian regime is transferring command and financial responsibility for some of these militias to Iran – reflecting the extent of Iran’s control in Syria.

The memo, which is dated April 11, 2017 and bears the signature of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in his capacity as commander in-chief of the Syrian armed forces, approves the recommendations of a committee responsible for regulating the activity of the armed Syrian forces operating in conjunction with Iran on Syrian territory.

THE GERMAN CHAPTER

MESOP NEWS : WILL TRUMP FIRE BRETT McGURK ?

Volltext http://www.mesop.de/?p=85800

MESOP NEWS : THE DAILY WITCH HUNT CONTRA TRUMP !
