MESOP TODAYS BOOK RECOMMENDATION  – PUBLICATION RELEASE

THE LINES THAT BIND – 100 Years of Sykes-Picot – Andrew J. Tabler, Editor  – Fabrice Balanche – Michael Knights and more

POLICY FOCUS 151 • DECEMBER 2016

A century after diplomats Mark Sykes of Britain and Francois Georges-Picot of France drew up a secret agreement to divide the Ottoman lands of the Middle East, a look at the modern map indicates the resulting states have largely stood the test of time — at least thus far. Most of these states are now under considerable demographic, economic, and political stress, which has led some analysts to predict eventual collapse for at least some of them. MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY JERUSALEM POST

Analysis: How will Putin react to ambassador’s assassination in Turkey?

20 Dec 2016 ——– It does not seem that the shooting will derail efforts to stabilize Syria. On Tuesday, talks are scheduled to begin in Moscow among Russia, Iran and Turkey, as well as others, on a possible diplomatic ending to the ongoing war in Syria.

The interests of these three countries are greater than an isolated incident, even the murder of an ambassador. Erdogan’s interests in Syria are also limited in their scope – he wants to ensure that a Kurdish entity will not be established along his country’s border. Putin’s interests are different. MESOP NEWS  TODAYS OPINION : Why Russia and Iran Are Abetting the Syrian Government

Harold Rhode – Jerusalem Center for public affairs – 20 Dec 2016 – The Syrian government, Russia, and Iran (SRI) are trying the change the demographic makeup of Syria.  They aim to depopulate Syria of the Arab Sunnis, which, before the Arab Spring was the largest religio-ethnic group in Syria. They mostly inhabited a very fertile strip of land between Aleppo in the north, down to Damascus, and then southward to the Jordanian border. Those Arab Sunnis who did not leave are being forced to move to Idlib and Raqqa, near the Turkish border.1

Examining SRI’s military campaign and its policy towards the refugees they have created suggests this SRI strategy.  The groups and places which the Russians have been attacking are the traditional strongholds of the Sunni Arab population – as of late Aleppo – the largest city in Syria. MESOP TODAYS SPOT : SYRIA WILL LIKELY SUFFER AS RUSSIA SEEKS VENGEANCE FOR AMBASSADOR’S MURDER

By Anna Borshchevskaya –  New York Daily News – December 19, 2016

Far from sparking World War III, the Ankara assassination will probably spur a Russian escalation against ‘terrorists’ in Syria and exacerbate internal divisions in Turkey.

Russian ambassador to Turkey Andrey Karlov died Monday after a gunman fatally wounded him during a speech at a photo exhibition in Ankara. The gunman shouted in Turkish: “Don’t forget Aleppo! Don’t forget Syria! As long as our brothers are not safe, you will not enjoy safety.” Karlov’s murder comes a day before a major Syria meeting in Moscow with Russian, Turkish, and Iranian officials.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=81287

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP INSIGHT:Tehran Maneuvers With Russia Over Syria

December 20 – Preparing for the next stage in Syria’s 69-month conflict, Iran is staking out its position with Russia and Turkey. Iranian media gave no detail of the discussion but put out Rouhani’s declaration, “It is very important that the Syrian people feel they are not alone in the fight against terrorists.” The President also juxtaposed his concern for humanitarian assistance — despite Iran’s involvement in Russian-regime sieges — with the supposed “disregard for the innocent people” by Western countries. The accounts declared that Putin “also stressed the importance of dispatching humanitarian aid to Syrians, saying the international community, including Iran and Russia, is obligated to protect and support the defenseless Syrian people across the country”. MESOP FOCUS : Russia-Iran-Turkey Confer in Moscow Today

December 20 – By Scott Lucas – eaworldview – ORIGINAL ENTRY: Foreign and defense ministers of Russia, Iran, and Turkey will confer on Tuesday over the future of Syria.

Russia and Iran have been essential backers of President Assad since the uprising began in March 2011, while Turkey has supported the Syrian opposition and rebels. Relations between Moscow and Ankara were at breaking point in November 2015, after Turkish jets shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian-Turkish border. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=81263

SOUTH KURDISTAN (IRAQ)

MESOP UPDATE : MUSINGS ON IRAQ – Mosul Campaign Day 63, Dec 18, 2016

On December 18 the Iraqi forces (ISF) were still trying to capturethe Wahda area of east Mosul. Since December 14 elements of the 9thand Golden Division along with police units have been attempting to recapture the Salam Hospital in the Wahda neighborhood. Overall operations in the city have slowed in preparation for a second phase. Islamic State resistance, dealing with the civilian population caught in the middle of the fighting, and heavy losses have also hindered the pace of the campaign. Part of the new push will be reinforcements to the eastern section of the city known as the Left Bank. A new army brigade for example is being sent to support the 9thDivision.

The United States is also shifting its tacticsto help the ISF. U.S. air strikes are trying to hit roads along the lines of advance by the Iraqi forces to try to hamper car bombs. The Americans are also targeting car bomb factories. A drawback to this policy is the fact that the ISF is travelling through the city in columns made up of HUMVEES and tanks so cratering roads may impede them as well. NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY)

MESOP NEWS INSIDER : Turkey, Russia Promise Cooperation Over Ambassador Assassination

“= Dec 2016 – Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Turkey and Russia would work together (AP) to investigate the assassination of Russian Ambassador Andrei Karlov by an off-duty Turkish police officer. Cavusoglu called the shooting a “heinous terror attack” in comments made during a visit with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which was previously scheduled for a discussion of the Syrian crisis. The U.S. embassy in Ankara was closed (Al Jazeera) Tuesday after a separate gunman fired shots outside the entrance hours after the assassination.

MESOP NEWS TODAYS ANALYSIS : Turkey blames usual suspects for murder of Russian ambassador – By Barın Kayaoğlu is an assistant professor of world history at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani.

Barın Kayaoğlu  – December 20, 2016 – What we know so far about the episode is as follows: Karlov habitually liked to blend in with local folks and therefore seldom traveled with a large security team. Thus, he was at grave risk when he attended a Russia-themed photo exhibit at an art gallery across the street from the US Embassy in Ankara’s upper-class district of Cankaya. Altintas, 22, who was serving with a riot police squad in the Turkish capital, was able to enter the gallery with a pistol because he had his official ID card. Karlov reportedly had no bodyguards inside the venue. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=81289

Man will verstehen, was unverständlich bleibt.

MESOP CULTUR : DIE SPRÜCHEKLOPFER SIND JETZT ALLE VON DER LEINE !

„Majid Sattar: – Das Vakuum westlicher Führung  – Die Tragödie von Aleppo und die Kosten der Nicht-Intervention! –  …… Heute ist der Westen in erbärmlicher Verfassung „….. FAZ 20 Dec 2016

(MESOP) www.mesop.de

MESOP INTEL : Das System hinter dem türkischen Spion in Deutschland

Von Daniel Herder – Hamburger Abendblatt – 20 Dec 2016

500 Agenten sollen in Deutschland für Nachrichtendienst MIT arbeiten. Vorwürfe von kurdischer Gemeinde

Hamburg. Volltext http://www.mesop.de/?p=81285
