MESOP TODAYS OPINION BY MICHAEL RUBIN – AMERICAN ENTERPRISE

Kurdistan rising: Are the Kurds prepared? Is the United States?

June 27, 2016 8:18 am | AEIdeas  – Ask most Kurds if they want independence and the answer is a resounding yes. “We’re the largest people without a nation,” goes a common refrain. Iraqi Kurdish political leader Masoud Barzani talks about the inevitability of independence and, every few years like clockwork, he calls for a referendum. How would that referendum be worded? No one knows, because no work has been done to make it happen. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=75503

MESOP TODAYS TOP ON THE AGENDA :  THE ISIS CAMPAIGN IN TURKEY / BACKGROUND & SUMMARY

By Caitlin Forrest and Chris Kozak (ISW)  – ISIS is refocusing its strategy in Turkey towards destabilizing the Turkish state and isolating it from the West. ISIS has two main lines of effort in Turkey. The first is to incite an ethnic war between the Kurds and the Turkish state in order to weaken its opponents in northern Syria and regain freedom of action in southern Turkey. The second is to undermine the Turkish state and punish it for being part of the anti-ISIS coalition through attacks against western targets in Turkey. ISIS has more actively pursued this second line of effort by targeting Westerners in Istanbul beginning in early 2016 while continuing its campaign along the Syrian border. The triple suicide bombing at the Istanbul Ataturk Airport on June 28, 2016 supports ISIS’s stated strategic objectives of seizing Constantinople and undermining the Turkish state by harming the vital tourism industry, targeting infrastructure that connects Turkey to the West, and raising requirements for domestic security services. ISIS has not claimed any spectacular attacks against the state in Turkey in order to avoid a major domestic crackdown that would threaten its freedom of action as well as its cross-border mobility into Syria. Moreover, ISIS already accomplishes its objectives in Turkey through spectacular attacks without risking a claim.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=75513

AN OVERVIEW OF EXISTING KURDISH POLITICAL PARTIES IN TURKEY INCLUDING HDP / SERTAC BUCAK’S COMMENTS

Could an alternative Kurdish party succeed in Turkey? / Fehim Tastekin

Ankara’s political corridors are filled with rumors that Turkey’s pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) is likely to split and that an alternative Kurdish party is being prepared, but many observers say a new party is unlikely.

Speculation was triggered by the recent remarks of party deputy Altan Tan, who said, “We are at a fork in the road in Kurdish politics.” He warned that if the country’s mindset of war doesn’t change and if divergent leftist, socialist and secular narratives continue, Kurds may face complicated developments. MESOP : GERMAN GOVERNMENT INVOLVE D ? – Assad Claims to Work with Western Governments / CNN & WASHINGTON POST

1 July 2016 – MESOP  – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad claimed that his government is clandestinely working with representatives of Western nations in an interview with Australian news channel SBS. “This is the double standard of the West in general: They attack us politically and they send us their officials to deal with us under the table, especially the security, including your government,” Assad told the Australian broadcaster, suggesting that the contacts are secret to not upset the United States, which he said his government does not communicate with directly. Though the Obama administration has no connections to the Assad regime, it is reportedly considering an arrangement with Russia to coordinate strikes against Jabhat al-Nusra, the Syrian al-Qaeda affiliate, in exchange for Russia halting strikes against U.S.-backed rebel forces.

Volltext http://www.mesop.de/?p=75509
