BBC News – October 4, 2016 – Coalition and Iraqi planners seem to have settled on a phased approach aimed at encircling the city, hitting Islamic State targets with precision weapons, and minimizing civilian casualties, but the aftermath could prove more difficult than the battle itself. Little by little, plans are leaking out regarding the imminent battle to remove the so-called Islamic State (IS) from Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city. Michael Fallon, the UK defence secretary, said military co-operation agreements were finalised on 23 September, adding that “the encirclement operation will begin in the next few weeks” with Mosul being liberated “in the next few months”. The president spent 25 precious hours, most of them in flight, after canceling all his Sept. 30 appointments to attend Peres’ funeral. As Obama stood before Peres’ coffin, he said, “In many ways, he reminded me of some other giants of the 20th century that I’ve had the honor to meet … leaders who … find no need to posture or traffic in what’s popular in the moment; people who speak with depth and knowledge, not in sound bites. NRTTV – 5 Oct 2016 – ANKARA,— Turkish troops deployed to northern Iraq in 2015 entered the country to train local fighters at the request of Massoud Barzani, Turkey’s deputy prime minister said Wednesday.

5 Oct 2016 – BasNews – SULAYMANIYAH — The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is suffering from increasing intraparty tensions between the ‘decision-making body’, led by the two secretary-general deputies and the influential faction, led by Hero Ibrahim, a politburo member and spouse of the secretary general. Following the meeting of Ibrahim with several leading figures of the party earlier this week under the title of a politburo meeting, the rival faction slammed the action, warning that it may “rapture” the PUK. 5 Okt 2016 – Majid Sattar – FAZ Vor dem Hintergrund dieser öffentlichen Äußerungen ist der Mitschnitt eines Gesprächs des amerikanischen Außenministers mit einer Gruppe von Syrern während der UN-Woche in New York interessant, den die „New York Times“ jetzt veröffentlicht hat. Unter anderem hatte Kerry gesagt, Assads absolute Gleichgültigkeit könnte seine Regierung neue Optionen erwägen lassen. Seit dem Dauerbombardement auf Aleppo gebe es in Washington „eine andere Debatte“. Er machte aber auch deutlich, dass eine Bewaffnung der Rebellen oder gar eine Beteiligung an den Kämpfen „nach hinten losgehen“ könne. Mit Blick auf Barack Obamas rote Linie, deren Überschreiten durch Assad ohne Konsequenzen blieb, sagte Kerry zudem: Er zähle zu den drei oder vier Leuten in der Regierung, welche sich dafür ausgesprochen hätten, militärisch gegen das Regime vorzugehen.
