The New York Times’ David Sanger had an interesting observation in a recent article on Vladimir Putin’s bizarre foreign policy – Russia, Sanger wrote, is a “declining economy with the gross domestic product of Italy.” So how come it manages to push around the United States, which has the world’s biggest economy and, as President Obama put it just last week, “by a mile, the greatest military on earth”? Because the United States has, by a mile, a president who is cautious to the point of timidity and prudent to the point of appearing heartless. – The crisis at the moment is Syria and the siege of Aleppo. Russia and the Assad regime’s fresh offensive on the country’s former economic center signals its intent to maximize gains in Syria before the next US presidential elections and its belief that victory is within reach.
On Monday, US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power slammed Russia for “barbarism’ in Syria as government forces, backed by Moscow, indiscriminately pummeled rebel-held Aleppo. On Sept. 23, RedHack, a Marxist-Leninist-Maoist computer hacking group, announced that they hacked into Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s son-in-law’s email accounts. Berat Albayrak is not only Erdogan’s eldest son-in-law, but he is also Turkey’s energy and natural resources minister. RedHack demanded that Asli Erdogan, an author and human rights activist, and other imprisoned left-wing activists be released by Sept. 25 or they would release the emails to the public. In „Wer den Wind sät: Was westliche Politik im Orient anrichtet‟ (München 2015) erklärt Michael Lüders den Sturz des iranischen Ministerpräsidenten Mossadegh 1953 zum „Sündenfall schlechthin“ westlicher Politik im Nahen Osten.
