Turkey Unable to Harm US-PYD Relations: PYD Official

4 Oct 2016 – BasNews – ERBIL — A leading member of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) said that Turkey cannot harm the relations between the Syrian Kurds and the US.

In response to Turkish foreign minister Mevlut Cavusoglu’s statement in which he said that the participation of the Kurdish forces in the operation of recapturing the city of Raqqa, the defacto capital of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria, would lead to an ethnic war, Abdulsalam Ahmed a leading member of PYD told BasNews that ” Raqqa is a Syrian city and its liberation is the responsibility of all the Syrians, including Arabs, Kurds,Turkmen and Assyrians. Turkey is unlikely to give the US an option to choose between the Kurds and Turkey to participate in the battle of retaking Raqqa, Ahmed said, noting that Turkey’s intervention will further deteriorate the situation and will abort the US plan of defeating IS.Ahmed accused Ankara of supporting the terrorists and facilitating their entrance to Syria as well providing them with logistic support in the region.

Turkish troops are unable to move into the Syrian Kurdistan as they did in Jarablus, he said, asserting that Turkey has been working on creating conflicts among the components of Syria since the start of the Syrian Turmoil, and it has constantly been supporting the armed militants against the Kurdish forces. PYD has proved its success in the fights against IS and won the US-led coalition’s trust. The Turkish government therefore will not succeed in harming the close relationship between PYD and the US, he argued. The forces that entered Jarablus with Turkish army’s support only substituted the flag of IS with the flag of the free Syrian army which is known to the US, the PYD official said. Turkish foreign minister, Cavusoglu said that the cooperation with PYD will expose Syria’s future to danger, and Turkey considers PYD and its armed Peoples’ Protection Units (PYG) an adjunct to Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which has been fighting the Turkish government since 1984. www.mesop.de
