AVOIDING ASSAD’S FORCED SOLUTION TO THE SYRIA CRISIS
PolicyWatch 2195 – January 21, 2014 – By Andrew J. Tabler – Given that Assad and his backers want to gut the transition process called for in the Geneva Communique, Washington should plan to take other steps in parallel to the Geneva process.
Syria’s Assad accused of boosting al-Qaeda with secret oil deals / Daily Telegraph UK
By Ruth Sherlock, in Istanbul & Richard Spencer – 21-1-2014 – The Syrian regime of President Bashar al-Assad has funded and co-operated with al-Qaeda in a complex double game even as the terrorists fight Damascus, according to new allegations by Western intelligence agencies, rebels and al-Qaeda defectors.Jabhat al-Nusra, and the even more extreme Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS), the two al-Qaeda affiliates operating in Syria, have both been financed by selling oil and gas from wells under their control to and through the regime, intelligence sources have told The Daily Telegraph.
Systematic killing evidence in Syria just tip of iceberg – aid agencies (Ignored by Western Peacenicks)
THE GUARDIAN – 22.1.2014 – International bodies say evidence of execution of 11,000 detainees in regime jails comes from just one area of Syria
The cache of evidence smuggled out of Syria showing the “systematic killing” of 11,000 detainees in Syrian jails may only be the tip of the iceberg, international aid agencies have said. The International Committee of the Red Cross, UN bodies and Human Rights Watch have repeatedly complained of having next to no access to detainees and being stonewalled by Syrian authorities despite repeated requests to visit infamous detention sites, such as Sayednaya prison in Damascus.
They said Monday’s report by three eminent international lawyers that at least 11,000 victims have been killed while in detention represents numbers in only one part of the country.
Turkey: Growing intolerance for dissent / By Human Rights Watch (STATEMENT)
22.4.2014 – MESOP – Turkey’s Justice and Development Party government showed growing intolerance toward political opposition, public protest, and critical media during 2013, Human Rights Watch said today in its World Report 2014. After the report went to press, government attempts to limit corruption investigations implicating ministers and the prime minister’s son further threatened justice and the rule of law.“
Israel should reach out to separatist Syrian Kurds / Ofra Bengio
14.1.2014 – Tel Aviv – At the end of 2013, the Kurds of Syria made a few unprecedented moves: They declared the establishment of a Kurdish autonomous region in Syria, published a draft of a Kurdish constitution, called for elections to a Kurdish parliament in four months and decided to join the upcoming Geneva conference on Syria as a unified delegation separate from both the government and the opposition. These bold moves indicate that while the Syrian regime and the myriad of opposition groups are busy destroying the Syrian state and each other, the Kurds of Syria are working assiduously to develop their own nation-building and state-building project.
“Observations of a Homsi living in Tartous,” by Aboud Dandachi (Interesting how Tartousi Assad-supporters see Obama now:)
Joshua Landis – January 21st, 2014 –*Aboud Dandachi is a Syrian activist from Homs, currently living in Istanbul. He is the author of the blog “From Homs to Istanbul” at www.adandachi.com/istanbul (The Dandashi family is a well known Sunni family.)
Over the course of the Syrian conflict, the port city of Tartous has been regarded as a bastion of loyalist support, a regime stronghold, and a city whose populace are loyal to Bashar Assad.
In fact, only two of the above statements are true.
I moved to Tartous in late March 2012, after being displaced first from my home in Homs, and then from my village of Telkelakh. Like all displaced persons since the beginning of time, I thought my troubles would be a temporary and I’d be able to return home once the situation improved. I hoped.
