Kobanê To Declare Autonomy on January 27th
(ANF) 25-1-2014 – In the Kobanê Canton of Rojava, preparations are underway for an official declaration of a Democratic Autonomous Government to take place this coming Monday, January 27th. Kobanê is one of three cantons in Rojava.

Kristin Helberg – Quantara – 25-1-2014 – The headlines on Syria at the moment leave a sense of incredulousness. “Islamists” are fighting “Islamists”, Assad is the “lesser evil” and our top priority must now be to “combat terrorism” – the terrorism perpetrated by al-Qaeda, of course, not by Bashar al-Assad. It is high time to recall what the conflict in Syria is really about and why this is exactly what delegates in Montreux should be talking about, namely the unseating of a murderous regime. Not because we in the West want this, but because the Syrians have demanded it by peaceful means and are being tortured, shot, bombed and starved as a result. Of course, everything is much more complicated than that. The revolution has morphed into a regional proxy war, demonstrators have become fighters and political activists have become humanitarian aid workers. This is why by the end of the peace conference in Montreux, there will be no peace for the time being.

| Introduction
The Geneva 2 peace conference on the Syrian crisis started January 22, 2014 in Montreux, Switzerland. Sponsored by the U.S., Russia and the U.N., it is attended by delegations of the Syrian regime and opposition, as well as delegations representing over 30 other countries, including Saudi Arabia but excluding Iran. The purpose of the conference, as stated in the invitation sent out by U.N. Secretary-general Ban Ki-Moon, is “to assist the Syrian parties in ending the violence and achieving a comprehensive agreement for a political settlement, implementing fully the [June 30, 2012] Geneva Communiqué [the closing statement of the Geneva 1 conference].”[1] |
SOC member Michel Kilo claims evidence of Assad links to ISIS
Andrew Parasiliti – AL MONITOR – January 23, 2014 – MONTREUX, Switzerland — Michel Kilo, a member of the Syrian National Coalition delegation participating in the Geneva II talks, said that the opposition is preparing its own case implicating the Syrian government in collaboration with terrorist groups including the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).
Lavrov: Kurds & NCB should be included
24-1-2014 – Lavrov urged the United Nations to allow the internal Syrian opposition to take part in the conference. – “We supported and continue to support all leading Syrian groups that operate within Syria – the National Coordination Committee, the National Front for Change and Liberation, and Kurdish organisations. All of them sent written appeals to the U.N., as the organizer of the conference, so as to solve the question of their participation in this process. We will insist on the resolution of this issue so that their appeals were upheld,” Lavrov said.
Syria regime threatens to quit peace talks
DAMASCUS – 24-1-2014 – AFP – Nowmedia – Syria is threatening to quit peace talks in Geneva by Saturday, criticizing the opposition delegation as “not serious,” state television said. Foreign Minister Walid “Muallem has told (UN-Arab League peace envoy Lakhdar) Brahimi that should serious sessions fail to take place by tomorrow, the official Syrian delegation will leave Geneva,” the channel said Friday.
