Syria: Kurdish fighter captured by Arab militia, demands YPG to halt operations
August 14, 2014 – ARA News – Qamishli, Syria – On Wednesday, clashes renewed between the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) and Arab rebels of Ahrar Geweran in the city of Hasakah, northeast of Syria. The clashes coincided with artillery shelling by pro-Assad army on Geweran. Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, media activist Ismail al-Ali said that several civilians were killed in Geweran due to artillery shelling on the neighbourhood on Wednesday.

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA) – SYRIA DIRECT 13-8-2014 – Regime forces and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) continued their bombardment of a holdout district in the northeastern city of al-Hasakah, marking the fourth consecutive day of fighting in the neighborhood. The PYD and regime forces engaged in fierce clashes with Ghweiran residents Tuesday night in a failed attempt to storm the neighborhood. The fighters are now independent, but many were with the FSA and the district is supportive of the Free Syrian Army.

August 12, 2014 – ARA News – Exclusive – Hasakah, Syria – Following days of clashes at the outskirts of Hasakah city in northeastern Syria, militants of the al-Qaeda splinter group of the Islamic State (IS) failed so far in entering the city. Military forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) –linked to the Democratic Union Party (PYD)– took turns in fighting against IS militants in Hasakah environs, preventing the advance of the latter towards the city.

Regime forces and the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) bombarded a holdout district still supporting the FSA in al-Hasakah city Monday night and Tuesday morning after attempting to capture it over the weekend.“Fifty mortars were launched from the military base and al-Ghazal Circle checkpoint, 15 artillery shells from Jabal al-Kawkab, and more than ten tank shells” struck the neighborhood, Ahmed al-Jazrawai, a civilian present in the Ghweiran neighborhood at the time told Syria Direct, adding that 20 were wounded, including women and children.

Days after the loss of a major military bases and pressure on its most important airports, the Assad regime is still keeping quiet. This week the jihadist Islamic State quickly overran the Regiment 93 base near Raqqa in northern Syria, following up its capture of the Regiment 121 base and leaving the regime with only one significant position — the Taqba airbase — in Raqqa Province.
Insurgents have moved within a few kilometers of Hama Military Airport, firing rockets into the complex, and Hama city in central Syria. Near the capital, they have moved towards Damascus International Airport, hoping to cut highways and put pressure on operations such as the transport of foreign fighters and Iranian weapons and supplies.
