MESOP FOCUS : Extremist Groups in Syria / By Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi
Sep 07, 2014 – Middle east Institute – Three and a half years into the Syrian civil war, it is clear that any hopes that the overall insurgency against the Assad regime might develop in a more “mainstream” and “moderate” direction have dissipated.[1]Hopes had been pinned on the rebel groups under the Free Syrian Army (FSA) banner in the southernmost province of Deraa (the “Southern Front”). Many of these groups, which espouse a vague, superficial religious identity,[2] were the intended recipients of arms shipments[3] approved by the United States in coordination with Saudi Arabia. My focus is on the jihadi organizations the Islamic State (IS, formerly the Islamic State in Iraq and ash-Sham), the Syrian al-Qa’ida affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra, and an assortment of other groups in Syria that espouse the project of a transnational Caliphate and whose influence vastly overshadows the Southern Front.

MESOP : THE ISIS OIL BUSINESS WITH PUTIN & GREEK ORTHODOX CHRISTIANS
“Specifically, HESCO is the subcontractor for Russian company Stroytransgaz”
NOW MEDIA 5-9-2014 – For a long time, the conventional narrative about the rise of the Islamic State (IS) has been that the jihadist group owes its rise to financial support from Gulf donors. However, as it has been established over the past year, the IS had far more lucrative revenue streams, including from the sale of oil from the fields it has seized in eastern Syria. What’s more, the IS sold that oil back to the Assad regime. This financial dealing was but one aspect of the tacit, opportunistic understanding between Bashar al-Assad and the IS.
