MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : ERDOGAN’S SECRET BRANCH ! – The Dark Side of Turkey’s Intelligence Community
Turkey and its National Intelligence Organization appear to abuse the intelligence and diplomatic process by seeking to insert flawed and false intelligence in order to constrain and subvert U.S. diplomatic options.
by Michael Rubin – AMERICAN ENTERPRISE 12 Aug 2019
Last week the U.S. Embassy in Turkey released a statement that said Washington had reached an agreement to implement “initial measures to address Turkey’s security concerns” and to establish a “peace corridor” inside Kurdish-controlled portions of Syria. The agreement aims to diffuse a crisis which saw the Turkish military mobilize along the Syrian border and threaten to occupy northern Syria, ostensibly to fight terrorism. The details of the agreement have not been made public.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS INSIGHT : TURKEY’S RISING WAVE OF SOCIAL PROTESTS
by Soner Cagaptay and Deniz Yuksel – PolicyWatch 3162 – August 12, 2019 – This year’s Istanbul election and last year’s move to a presidential system have unified and galvanized the opposition, raising questions about Erdogan’s next move.
Ever since the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) suffered a rout in Istanbul’s June 23 mayoral race, Turkey has witnessed a rise in anti-government protests, mostly focusing on environmental issues. The wave of demonstrations—the country’s largest since the 2013 Gezi Park rallies—suggests a newfound vitality among the opposition, with potentially deep implications for Turkey’s democracy.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS REPORT : Turkey – New Law Restricts Online Media Outlets:
On August 1, Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK) passed an amendment requiring streaming services and online broadcasters to obtain a license, which could cost up to $18,000, to broadcast in Turkey. While the law affects entertainment services such as Netflix and YouTube, it also applies to a number of news agencies with online operations, including the BBC, Voice of America, and Germany’s Deutsche Welle. A 30-day period was granted for companies to obtain a license; lack of a license will result in the government blocking the sites. Free speech advocates have been sharply critical of the law. Veysel Ok, co-director of the Media and Law Studies Association, stated that “the only purpose of this law and the mandate that comes with it is to [block content] from those sources and bring independent media outlets under control.” The RTUK claims that the goal of the regulation “is to establish the methods and principles to regulate the presentation and provision of radio, television and on-demand broadcast services… and the supervision of the broadcasts in question.”

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : THE ACTUAL TERMS OF THE POLITICAL TRADE – U.S. SAFE ZONE DEAL CAN HELP TURKEY COME TO TERMS WITH THE PKK AND YPG
by Soner Cagaptay – PolicyWatch 3161 – August 7, 2019
Checking the YPG’s ascendance in Syria could bring the PKK back to the negotiating table, ultimately making Turkey more amenable to Kurdish enclaves across the border.
Earlier today, Ankara and Washington agreed to “stand up a joint operations center in Turkey as soon as possible to coordinate and manage the establishment of a safe zone” in Syria. This development could help realign the relationship between Turkey’s Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and its Syrian offshoot, the People’s Defense Units (YPG), a group that controls large swaths of Syria’s northern frontier. That in turn could help heal a major sore point in U.S.-Turkish relations.
