When Turkey welcomed Iranian Chief of General Staff Mohammad Bagheri to Ankara in mid-August, it was the first time since the Iranian revolution of 1979 that an Iranian official of his position had traveled abroad. In an equally surprising move, Ankara announced in August that it was preparing to host the Russian military chief, Valery Gerasimov, to discuss regional security. The vigor of Turkey’s outreach to Iran and Russia, two historic rivals, ought to raise eyebrows in President Donald Trump’s White House. It not only signals an important foreign policy shift, but is an indicator that Ankara has given up on Washington.

Amberin Zaman September 11, 2017 – AL MONITOR – Rumor has it that the head of Turkish intelligence is planning a trip to Erbil, where he would face an uphill struggle to free Turkish operatives allegedly held there and perhaps discourage the upcoming referendum on independence. Turkey’s spy chief, Hakan Fidan, is planning to travel to the Iraqi Kurdish capital Erbil this week, part of a mission to push for the release of Turkish operatives who are being held by Kurdish militants and presumably also to seek to delay a referendum on Iraqi Kurdish independence, local officials speaking on strict condition of anonymity told Al-Monitor. They declined to elaborate, and a spokesman for Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT) did not return Al-Monitor’s calls for comment.

Zwar unterstützt Dänemark die Forderung nach einem Abbruch der Beitrittsverhandlungen, und auch die Niederlande haben sich Ankara gegenüber immer wieder unnachgiebig gezeigt: Seit dem EU-Außenministertreffen in Tallinn vergangene Woche mehren sich aber die Stimmen, die an den Gesprächen festhalten wollen. Explizit äußerten sich Großbritannien, Irland und Ungarn in dieser Richtung. Auch Polen, Spanien, Frankreich sowie Estland — das die Ratspräsidentschaft innehat — wollen den kompletten Bruch mit Ankara vermeiden. Griechenlands Regierungschef Alexis Tsipras sagte, das Verhandlungsende wäre ein „strategischer Fehler”.
