Young Kurdish journalist murdered

20 Sep 2013 – Kurdistan Tribune – Yakob Rasol Mohamed, a young journalist in the south of Kurdistan, was shot dead in front of his house in the town of Qalaidiza on Wednesday night (September 18th).

The police have arrested a number of people but currently there are no details of anyone being charged. A group of local independent newspapers – Hawlati, Awena,Lvinpress and Shapress – have issued a statement condemning the murder and calling on the authorities to find out who was responsible. The statement says: “This is not only an attack on the young journalist Yakob Rasol Mohamed but it is an attack on free speech and freedom of journalism”.
