PUK – A thoroughly corrupt party : PUK leader arrested in Iraqi Kurdistan on charges of killing Kurdish journalist Kawa Germyani

January 7, 2014 – shafaaq news – Hawlati – SULÊMANÎ, : –  The main suspect in the killing of the Kurdish journalist Kawa Germyani arrested in Sulêmanî, local news reported.

A source in Sulaimaniyah in Kurdistan Region said on Tuesday, that a leader in the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Mahmoud Sangawi was arrested Tuesday night in Kalar on charges of killing anti-corruption Kurdish journalist Kawa Germyani who was killed on On December 5, 2013, outside his home in Kalar district by unidentified gunmen. “Sangawi and after coming to the investigation courthouse, the judge decided to arrest him after two hours of interrogation,” local news reported. “Sangawi has told the judge on the basis of being a major military rank and demanded to return to the Ministry of Peshmerga to be arrested there, but the judge rejected the request and decided to arrest him until the completion of the investigation in the case”. the source added.

Kawa Germyani published an article about the leader in Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party PUK, Mahmoud Sangawi, in July 2012, later on Germyani received a threatening phone call from Sangawi, which been recorded and distributed by Kawa. Kawa also had filed a complaint in the court against the PUK’s Sangawi who had threatened him.

The family of the journalist Kawa Germyani has filed a complaint to the court against Sangawi based on the threats directed to Germyani recorded in his mobile phone a few days before his assassination.

Kawa Ahmed Germyani, a Kurdish journalist investigating corruption in Kurdistan region, was the editor-in-chief of Rayal magazine and a correspondent for Awene newspaper, he was shot dead by unidentified gunmen on December 5, in Kalar town, in Sulaimaniyah province. He was shot in front of his house, and later died at the hospital.  Hundreds of people protested in Erbil and Sulemani city last Sunday against the assassination of Kawa Germyani and other journalists killed in Kurdistan region. The demonstrators call on the Kurdish government to bring the perpetrators and murderers to justice.
