Basnews English – 9 June 2016 – SULAYMANIYAH — Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is increasingly active across Sulaymaniyah and Halabja provinces of Kurdistan Region, says a Kurdish member of the Iraqi parliament.
MP Shakhawan Abdullah, member of the parliamentary committee for Defense and Security Affairs, told BasNews that the local administration of Sulaymaniyah province will be required to give clarification about the activities PKK is conducting in the area. According to Abdullah, PKK is receiving military and financial support from the Iraqi central government to lead its activities in the Kurdistan Region, especially in Sinjar and its surrounding areas. “PKK’s activities in Sulaymaniyah province, however, is not an odd incident as they have previously established offices and, in some areas, military bases as well,” said the MP, noting that the locals have reported PKK checkpoints in some areas of Sulaymaniyah and Halabja provinces.
He claimed that the guerrillas have reportedly collected taxes in some areas and started recruiting underage locals and setting up custom offices on the border between Kurdistan Region and Iran, taxing people unofficial border crossings fees.
