PKK Allies with Baghdad to Partake in Mosul Operation – The PKK-Affiliated YBS will participate in the operation with 1,600 fighters


Diyar Aziz – BasNews – SINJAR —  26 March 2016 – The Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS), an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), has declared its alliance with the Iraqi central government for participating in the Mosul operation.

In a statement released on Saturday, YBS Command centre revealed that it has established an alliance with the Iraqi central government in Baghdad according to which YBS will participate in the operation to liberate Mosul with 1,600 fighters. YBS also stated that along with the Iraqi government, the People’s Defence Forces (HPG), an armed wing of PKK, will be lending support to YBS during the mission. The Baghdad’s support for PKK comes amid a prolonged dispute between the Iraqi central government and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). BasNews previously reported that the Shi’ite-led government in Baghdad is planning to increase the number of PKK guerrillas and their affiliated forces in Sinjar and other areas near Mosul, hoping to secure the implementation of its agenda in the post-IS phase in Northern Iraq.
