There’s still a debate about the origins of COVID-19. Perhaps it leaked from a Chinese government lab. Perhaps it didn’t. One thing though is increasingly certain: the virus is turning us into China. In response to a health problem, western democracies — and even America — have abandoned the messy idea of liberty and turned towards Chinese-style authoritarianism. It’s as if Beijing sneezed and we all caught authoritarianism. We’ve been Sinofied.
If you think I exaggerate, listen to what White House press secretary Jen Psaki announced yesterday. It’s worth quoting at length:

Es gibt immer noch eine Debatte über die Ursprünge von COVID-19. Vielleicht ist es aus einem Labor der chinesischen Regierung durchgesickert. Vielleicht tat es das nicht. Eines ist jedoch immer sicherer: Das Virus macht uns zu China. Als Reaktion auf ein Gesundheitsproblem haben westliche Demokratien – und sogar Amerika – die chaotische Idee der Freiheit aufgegeben und sich dem Autoritarismus nach chinesischem Vorbild zugewandt. Es ist, als ob Peking nieste und wir alle den Autoritarismus erwischten. Wir wurden sinofied.
Wenn Sie denken, dass ich übertreibe, hören Sie sich an, was die Pressesprecherin des Weißen Hauses, Jen Psaki, gestern angekündigt hat. Es lohnt sich, ausführlich zu zitieren:
“Wir haben die Desinformationsforschung und -verfolgung verstärkt. Im Büro des Surgeon General’s Office kennzeichnen wir Beiträge für Facebook, die Desinformationen verbreiten. Es ist wichtig, schneller gegen schädliche Beiträge vorzugehen. Wie Sie alle wissen, reisen Informationen ziemlich schnell auf Social-Media-Plattformen. Manchmal ist es nicht genau, und Facebook muss schneller handeln, um schädliche verletzende Beiträge zu entfernen. Beiträge, die innerhalb ihrer Richtlinien zum Entfernen liegen würden, bleiben oft tagelang bestehen. Das ist zu lang. Die Informationen verbreiten sich zu schnell.

Mazal Mualem AL MONITOR July 19, 2021 – Foreign Minister Yair Lapid delivered a brief but contentious speech before the 7th Global Forum on Combatting Anti-Semitism on July 14, and his remarks are still the subject of heated debate and discussion.
Lapid’s many critics, led by former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, argued that the speech damaged the struggle against anti-Semitism. Politicians and opinion-makers, mainly from the right, called what Lapid said “strange” and “post-modern,” claiming that it played straight into the hands of those who deny that the very phenomenon of anti-Semitism exists.

THE GOVERNMENT OF ISRAEL is reportedly investigating allegations that Yossi Cohen, who recently stepped down from the helm of the Mossad, Israel’s external spy agency, had an extra-marital affair for two years. It is also claimed that the extra-marital relationship took place while Cohen was director of the Mossad, and that he shared classified information with his alleged mistress, who is reportedly a flight attendant. Cohen, 59, with four children, assumed the directorship of the Mossad in 2015. He is a 35-year veteran of Israel’s pre-eminent spy agency, which he left briefly in 2013 to chair Israel’s National Security Council and advise the prime minister. He is known as one of former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s most trusted advisers. Cohen grew up in Jerusalem and became a fighter pilot before joining the Mossad. He gradually rose through the agency’s ranks to become its deputy director. Prior to that role, he led for several years the Mossad’s Department of Collections, which handles operations officers around the world. He then led the agency’s Political Action and Liaison Department, which is tasked with facilitating cooperation between the Mossad and foreign intelligence agencies. According to Israel’s privately owned Channel 13 television, Israel’s Ministry of Justice is currently handling an official complaint, according to which Cohen has been having “a close relationship” for the past two years with a woman who is not his wife, and who is believed to be a flight attendant. Additionally, the complaint claims that Cohen shared classified information with his alleged mistress during the course of their affair. According to Channel 13, the complaint has been handed over to the Attorney General of Israel, Avichai Mandelblit, who is reviewing it. The Channel 13 report said Cohen has strongly denied the allegations, saying that “there is no flight attendant [and] there is no close relationship”. The former Mossad chief added that he had not been contacted by Attorney General Mandelblit about the complaint, or for any other reason. The television station gave no further information about the alleged complaint, the identity of the flight attendant, or the state of the Attorney General Mandelblit’s investigation. Unter seiner Führung stieg sein kleines, im Süden des heutigen Bagdad am Euphrat gelegenes Königreich zu einer Großmacht auf, die große Teile des Vorderen Orients beherrschte.
Der altorientalischen Nachwelt galt Hammurapi bis zum Untergang der Keilschriftkultur um die Zeitenwende als einer der größten Könige, nicht nur wegen seiner umfangreichen Eroberungen, sondern auch, weil er sich mit seiner als „Kodex Hammurapi“ bekannt gewordenen Sammlung von „Rechtssprüchen“ den Ruf des Weisesten und Gerechtesten aller Herrscher erworben hatte, der allen Menschen, auch den Armen und Schwachen, Gerechtigkeit widerfahren ließ.
