Mit der Veröffentlichung von Du sollst erfinden ist haben wir die edition mena-watch ins Leben gerufen. Unter diesem Label erscheinen künftig Schriften, für die Mena-Watch die redaktionelle Verantwortung trägt.

Den Grundstein dafür hatten wir schon vor einem Jahr mit unseren beiden Dossiers über die Geschichte Israels und völkerrechtliche Aspekte der jüdischen Präsenz in Judäa und Samaria (»Westjordanland«) gelegt. Nach knapp einem Jahr ist die erste Auflage nun vergriffen. Daher haben wir die Dossiers aktualisiert und optisch aufgefrischt, ein paar kleine Fehler ausgebessert (danke für die Hinweise!) und in der edition mena-watch neu aufgelegt.

Wenn Ihr wollt, ist es kein Märchen führt Sie durch Eckpunkte jüdischer und israelischer Geschichte, von der Entwicklung der ersten Stadtstaaten vor 5000 Jahren über das erstmalige Auftauchen der Idee eines palästinensischen Volkes im Jahr 1964 bis zu den Abraham Abkommen.

I believe the Governors at the session of the Board can and should call upon #Iran and the #IAEA Secretariat to overcome the current problems and to maintain traditional businesslike cooperation which was affected primarily due to some external factors. No action is needed.

One year since the announcement of the so-called Abraham Accords, Israeli newspapers and commentators reflect on what has been achieved in the intervening time period and the remaining challenges. The Accords, a series of normalization agreements Israel signed initially with the UAE, then followed by Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco, were one of former US president Donald Trump’s most visible achievements in the Middle East. However, many remain concerned that by side-stepping the Palestinian question, the normalization agreements have only put a band-aid on the most pressing issues in the region, rather than resolved them.

Taliban Announce Caretaker Government With Longtime Leaders in Top Positions

The Taliban announced a caretaker cabinet (NYT) that includes many hard-line figures who held authority when the group last ruled Afghanistan in the 1990s. The cabinet did not appear to include many members of minority communities nor former Afghan government officials, contradicting the Taliban’s pledges (TOLOnews) that their rule will be inclusive.

Most members of the new cabinet come from the Pashtun ethnic group (AP), and several are designated global terrorists by the United States and United Nations. Some are members of the Haqqani militant network (WaPo), which has perpetrated deadly attacks and kidnappings in Afghanistan over the past twenty years. On the heels of the announcement, a group of Western officials chaired by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas is set to discuss the terms of possible international engagement (Guardian) with the Taliban government. The United Nations has warned that humanitarian access to Afghanistan needs to be maintained as the country’s economy threatens to collapse.
Analysis
“So much for a kinder, gentler Taliban. Their pick for the rough equivalent of the Taliban’s FBI Director? A US-designated terrorist with close ties to al-Qaeda, whose network has been involved in attacks against US military and civilian targets,” the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ Seth G. Jones tweets.

“We should make it very clear that there will be no international aid to Afghanistan without the Taliban meeting clear conditions on human rights, as there is no way to guarantee that continued aid flows to vulnerable segments of society will not enrich the group,” the Alliance of Democracies Foundation’s Anders Fogh Rasmussen writes for Foreign Affairs.

MENA WATCH : “Pakistan has been a virtual client regime of the Chinese Communist Party for several decades. Islamabad’s victories, including in Afghanistan, are very much those of the CCP, even if the Biden administration believes otherwise.”
