The Revolutionary Commando Army has suddenly defected from the US Al-Tanf base near the Syria-Jordan border after striking a deal with the Assad regime. DEBKAfile reports. The last local rebel force serving the American base, it was believed to be heading north across the desert from its post on the Jordanian border to join up with government forces in the Deir ez-Zour region. US officials have not confirmed or commented on this development.
The Al Tanf garrison is wedged strategically in the intersection of Syrian, Jordanian and Iraqi borders and in position to block Iranian military ingress through Iraq from the south. The small US garrison at Al Tanf has for years held out against Syrian and pro-Iranian militia attacks, countering encroachments on its 55-km security belt with air and rocket artillery strikes. The Revolutionary Commando Army (Maghawweri Thowra) and other US-backed militias were also targeted. Tanf remained in place – even during partial troop drawdowns in other parts of Syria.
On Saturday, Deir officials in Deir Ez-Zour reported a violent outbreak of coronavirus due to the influx of Iranian and Iraqi Shiite militia forces across the border into Syria.

Am Samstag, den 4. April, verschickte Hendrik Streeck über sein Twitter-Konto einen Tweet, ein großes Zitat in weißer Schrift auf grünem Grund. Thema natürlich: Die Studie, in der der Direktor des Instituts für Virologie an der Uniklinik Bonn gerade unter weltweiter Anteilnahme die Ausbreitung des Coronavirus im besonders betroffenen Ort Gangelt im Kreis Heinsberg untersucht. „Es geht hier nicht um Meinungen, das Ziel ist es, eine Faktenbasis zu schaffen“, schrieb er. Einen Tag später folgte ein weiterer Tweet: „Erst wenn wir in einer definierten Population die Dunkelziffer ermitteln können, können wir verstehen, wie gefährlich oder tödlich das Virus ist.“
Die Sätze, die über Streecks persönliches Konto auf dem Kurznachrichtendienst verbreitet wurden, sind kein Zufallsprodukt. Sie finden sich wortgleich in einem Konzept der Kommunikationsagentur Storymachine, die die Öffentlichkeitsarbeit für Streecks Feldstudie übernommen hat.

Es rührt sich Widerstand. Kleinere Gruppen haben in dieser Woche in North Carolina, in Ohio, in Utah und in Virginia gegen strenge Verhaltensregeln ihrer Gouverneure protestiert. In Michigan brachte ein Autokonvoi voller Demonstranten den ohnehin ausgedünnten Verkehr rund um das Kapitol der Landeshauptstadt Lansing zum Erliegen. Er hüllte die Gegend in eine Klangwolke aus Hupgeräuschen. Aus den Autos hingen amerikanische Flaggen heraus und „Make America great again“-Banner. TV-Sender zeigten ein Fahrzeug, auf dessen Windschutzscheibe ein weißes Band mit der Aufschrift „Lasst mich zurück an die Arbeit gehen“ stand.
Eine interessante Aufgabenteilung zeichnet sich ab: Die Protestler geben den Gouverneuren die Schuld. Präsident Donald Trump positioniert sich als der nationale Schlüsseldienst, der die Blockaden aufhebt. Am Freitag veröffentlichte das Weiße Haus Richtlinien für die Wiedereröffnung der nationalen Wirtschaft in drei Phasen. Bundesstaaten mit weniger Fällen werden zu einer raschen Wiedereröffnung ermuntert. Zugleich betonte Trump die Zuständigkeit der Gouverneure. Man wittert Methode.

Was die Medien am 15./16. April nicht unter den Tisch fallen lassen konnten, aber nach wenigen Tagen wieder vergessen sein wird: Fünf Dschihadisten kommen nach einem Jahr Beobachtung in „Untersuchungshaft“: Anschlagsziel waren US-Einrichtungen in Deutschland – und ein zum Christentum konvertierter Ex-Muslim, was von Zeitungen unterschlagen wurde.
Diesmal in NRW, was kein Zufall ist. Dieses Land hat einen Ausländeranteil von über 15 Prozent, bei einem Bundesdurchschnitt von 13,5 Prozent. Es sind Tschetschenen einer Terrorzelle des Islamischen Staates IS. Der Fall habe „riesige Dimensionen.“ Diese Personen sind als „Flüchtlinge“ eingereist; wann das war, wird nicht mitgeteilt. Aber selbst diese halbe Information ist irreführend. Denn Grenzübertritte erfolgen zuerst einmal wertneutral als Migranten.
