MESOPOTAMIA NEWS “IN DEPTH!” : KHAMENEI USES IRAQ WAR ANNIVERSARY TO REINFORCE IRANIAN STEADFASTNESS

by Omer Carmi  – Policy Alert September 22, 2020 –  Rather than explicitly addressing Washington’s reactivation of sanctions, the Supreme Leader sought to convince domestic listeners that Iran can ‘resist’ external pressures and the latest COVID-19 wave on its own.

Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s speech at the annual Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) leadership gathering tends to be closely analyzed by Iran watchers for good reason. As with his yearly Nowruz speeches, he often uses the event to signal domestic and foreign audiences about his approach to international affairs. Most famously, the emphasis on “heroic flexibility” in his 2013 speech foreshadowed Tehran’s signing of an interim nuclear agreement with the P5+1 a few weeks later and the adoption of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015. Last year’s speech took a different tone—Khamenei expressed confidence that the regime could cope with U.S. pressure and warned that Washington’s goal was to eliminate the Islamic Republic’s revolutionary character and force it to conform with the American global order. In doing so, he essentially previewed months of Iranian defiance on regional and nuclear issues.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS RECOMMENDATION : WPCS | New Publication   Private Security Companies in Syria:New Agents at the Regime’s Service by Manhal Baresh  22 Sept 2020

MEDirections is delighted to share a new Research Project Report from the Wartime and Post Conflict in Syria project (WPCS). This paper was originally published in Arabic on 28 July 2020. It is now available in English.

In 2013, President Bashar al-Assad issued Decree No. 55 licensing private protection and guard service companies.

Was the move towards the privatisation of the security sector part of a series of concessions made by the regime to Russia and Iran on the economic and military fronts? Or was it a response to internal dynamics reflecting a need to protect Syrian businessmen close to the regime’s inner circle or ones affiliated with Russia and Iran in the light of the security apparatus’s failure to provide them with sufficient protection? Alternatively, was this privatisation a response to the regime’s need to re-absorb certain members of disbanded militias?

This research paper attempts to analyse the rise of these private security companies by detailing the most prominent ones and their owners and their roles, affiliations and the underlying local economic and security dynamics behind their creation.

WPCS provides operational and strategic analysis of prospects, challenges, trends and policy options in wartime and in preparation for post-conflict in Syria. WPCS is funded by the European Union and is implemented through a partnership between the European University Institute (Middle East Directions Programme/Syria Initiative) and COAR (Center for Operational Analysis and Research).

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : THE FOUNDATION OF EVERLASTING PEACE ISRAEL & ARAB NATIONS

Saudi Arabia | Special Dispatch No. 8942  –  21 Sept 2020 – MEMRI

In an article published September 13, 2020, two days before the signing of the Israel-UAE-Bahrain peace agreements in Washington, Khalid bin Hamad Al-Malik, editor of the Saudi daily Al-Jazirah, wrote that the Arabs, having failed to defeat Israel militarily and having realized its strength, have no option but to normalize relations with Israel. After 70 years of bitter experience, he wrote, some Arab countries now understand that they must adopt different strategies and reach understandings with Israel in order to achieve what cannot be achieved without establishing peace. Castigating the Palestinian leadership and Turkey, who had condemned these agreements even though they themselves had been among the first to recognize Israel, Al-Malik also stressed that any country’s decision to do this is sovereign and independent, and that neither the Palestinians nor others who exploit their cause have any right to interfere in it.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS Interview  : SEAWATCH ? NEIN !

Marc Felix Serrao 29.08.2019, 15.44 Uhr NEUE ZÜRCHER ZEITUNG

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS  KOMMENTAR : HALTESTELLE KARL MARX MUSS WEG !

http://www.juedischerundschau.de/article.2020-09.die…

Sehr geehrter Herr Dr. Rolf Erfurt,
