For a year filled with fear and uncertainty, as plague collided with the final eruptions of the Trump era, the political lessons of 2020 are uncannily clear. Elite institutional authority is everywhere collapsing in a bonfire of self-immolation even as elite institutions become ever more powerful.
What ties the impeachment drama that began the year together with the pandemic, months of political violence and faulty predictions of a Biden blowout, is a system-wide failure of expert knowledge and elite institutional response. “Where were all the experts?” asked New York’s governor Andrew Cuomo in April, at the height of his state’s Covid outbreak. Cuomo blamed more or less every wing of the sprawling structure of elite expertise, pointing the finger for what happened on his watch at “the international health community… the WHO, the NIH, the CDC… the intelligence community… the New York Times… the Wall Street Journal”.

On December 15, Moshe Patel, head of the Israel Missile Defense Organization, publicly signaled that his agency was interested in working with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, building on the existing U.S.-Israeli cooperation in the missile defense sector. These states share an obvious community of interest: all of them are threatened by Iran’s fast-developing missile, rocket, and drone forces.

Offenbar hat China versucht nicht-staatliche Akteure in Afghanistan für Angriffe auf amerikanische Soldaten zu gewinnen. Medienberichten zufolge soll Präsident Trump jetzt von den Geheimdiensten über die Vorfälle unterrichtet worden sein.

Ob ich nur dann in die Bundespressekonferenz (BPK) dürfe, wenn dort die Pressesprecher seien, und nicht, wenn die Chefs da sind – diese Frage hat mir vor einigen Wochen ein Leser gestellt. Nein, es gibt keine Zwei-Klassen-Gesellschaft in der BPK. Bei den Auftritten von Angela Merkel und Jens Spahn in den drei Monaten, die ich jetzt Mitglied bin, war ich schlicht nicht in Berlin bzw. verhindert. Als gestern kurzfristig die Nachricht kam, dass heute Jens Spahn und RKI-Chef Lothar Wieler kurz vor Neujahr nochmal zur BPK kommen, war meine Freude dennoch verhalten – hatte ich mich doch innerlich schon vom Regierungsviertel verabschiedet für dieses Jahr. Umso spannender wurde es dann heute – und wie so oft genau da, wo man es als Fernsehzuschauer nicht erwartet. Nach Ende der Pressekonferenz kam RKI-Chef Wieler auf mich zu und es entwickelte sich ein interessantes Gespräch. Aber alles der Reihe nach.

This comes at a time in which the Ain Isaa District in the Euphrates Region undergoes intense shelling and violent attacks by the mercenary groups affiliated to the Turkish Occupation Forces, as they have been failed so far to gain any ground or occupy the area, to which the Turkish Occupation Army use intelligence network to achieve it’s plots in the region.

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Turkey’s defense minister Hulusi Akar paid a rare visit to Sanliurfa province on the Syrian border on Wednesday to inspect troops amid intensified clashes with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in neighbouring Syria’s Ain Issa town.
Akar led a top military delegation to visit forces in the country’s southeastern Sanliurfa province, according to a ministry statement. They were briefed about the developments in Turkey’s military activities “on the ground” – a reference to recent clashes with the SDF.

Unusual deployments by the U.S. and Israeli navies may be intended to deter Iranian attacks in the Gulf, but both moves are ripe for misinterpretation in Tehran.
On December 21, the American nuclear-powered guided missile submarine USS Georgia (SSGN-729) transited the Strait of Hormuz and entered the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf. The massive vessel is one of only four in the U.S. Navy converted to carry 154 conventionally armed Tomahawk land-attack cruise missiles—about half the tactical missile strike capability of an entire naval task force, with ranges of 1,300 to 2,500 kilometers. The Georgia can also carry sixty-six SEAL commandos and deploy them covertly for clandestine operations. Offering robust intelligence gathering and task force command-level secure communications capabilities, the Navy’s four cruise missile submarines are usually assigned the most challenging tasks.
