I can still remember the first time my older brother beat me in an arm wrestle. We’re only 17 months apart and shared everything as children – from Lego to imaginary worlds, as well a degree of (usually affectionate) casual violence. Until we both hit puberty, I could reliably beat him at arm wrestling.
Then at 11ish and 13ish, we arrived roughly simultaneously at the onset of puberty. Suddenly he was a lot taller than me and, seemingly overnight, noticeably stronger. Any illusions I had about boys and girls being equal in every way died in that moment, along with my title as All-Harrington Arm-Wrestling Champion.
If you’re a woman with a middle-class upbringing and career path, the fact that men are generally stronger than you doesn’t normally make much difference. Chances are you went to a school that discouraged bullying and punished physical violence. You probably now do an office-based job. So why care about arm wrestling?
After all, feminism is, as activist Cheris Kamarae put it, “the radical notion that women are human beings”: that means believing men and women are equal, sexism is bad, and being able to vote is good. What’s not to like?

Das ist passiert: Vier von fünf Notenbanken weltweit tüfteln an der Einführung einer digitalen Währung, aber weit gediehen sind die Pläne nur auf den Bahamas, in Schweden sowie in China. Die chinesische Notenbank People’s Bank of China (PBoC) hat eine digitale Währung mit dem noch sperrigen Namen Digital Currency Electronic Payment (DCEP) entwickelt. Derzeit laufen Pilotprojekte. Die Teilnehmer brauchen für die Nutzung der virtuellen Währung weder Bankkonto noch Internetzugang.

Offenbar kriselt es zwischen beiden Seiten inzwischen sogar in der Kommunikation. Die auf EU-Themen spezialisierte Nachrichtenseite „Politico“ spricht inzwischen von einem „Impfstoff-Handelskrieg“, der die EU in eine Identitätskrise stürze.

Editorial note: This study, which reveals the extent to which Turkey aggressively deploys proxies and militias to project power across the Middle East, is the first fruit of a cooperation agreement between the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security and TRENDS Research & Advisory of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The two institutes will continue to research together regional military and security issues. They also intend to conduct symposia and maintain academic exchange programs.

Khazan Jangiz ERBIL, RUDAW – Kurdistan Region — A Peshmerga ministry official warned on Tuesday of the Islamic State (ISIS) group’s growing strength and reorganization in Iraq, particularly in areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad.
“There have been around 15 activities from January 1 until now, most of them were in [disputed] regions like Diyala, Kirkuk, Salahaddin,” Deputy Minister of Peshmerga Sarbast Lazgin told Rudaw’s Hawraz Gulpy on Tuesday. “Some of these attacks were effective, they were strong attacks, they have become stronger than they were before.”

There’s an old Jewish joke that Woody Allen told in Annie Hall. There are two old people at a restaurant, and one says “Boy, the food at this place is really terrible.” The other one says, “Yeah; and such small portions!”
That is slightly how I feel about reports coming out of the EU saying that 1) the Oxford/AstraZeneca doesn’t work and 2) complaining that they haven’t been given enough of it.
