MESOPOTAMIA NEWS FRICTIONS: U.S. Navy Carries Out Exercise in South China Sea

Two U.S. aircraft carrier groups held joint drills in the South China Sea amid tensions between Washington and Beijing, which claims much of the waterway. The operation was the first of its kind (Al Jazeera) since July and occurred days after a U.S. vessel conducted a so-called freedom of navigation operation in the sea, drawing ire from China. In a call with reporters, the carriers’ commanders said Chinese military capacity in the South China Sea has recently increased (FT) but emphasized that the joint exercise did not target any country.

China’s Foreign Ministry pledged to take “necessary measures” to defend the country’s sovereignty and security. Chinese state media also suggested that the exercises were symbolic, rather than for a military purpose, a claim the U.S. commanders denied. The United States and its allies have increased pressure (SCMP) on China over the South China Sea. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said last week that the United States will hold China “accountable for its efforts to threaten stability in the Indo-Pacific.”

Analysis
“There is the possibility of an accidental sea or air collision, but it’s unlikely a war will break out,” Nanjing University’s Zhu Feng tells the South China Morning Post.

“The United States has a strong interest in preventing China from asserting control over the South China Sea. Maintaining free and open access to this waterway is not only important for economic reasons, but also to uphold the global norm of freedom of navigation,” Georgetown University’s Oriana Skylar Mastro writes in a CFR Contingency Planning Memorandum.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS URGENTLY NEEDED  :  RED CARD FOR RED CHINA ! (But not via Joe Biden)

The United States and Japan Should Prepare for War with China

Jeffrey W. Hornung February 5, 2021 – WAR ON THE ROCKS – Jeffrey W. Hornung is a political scientist at the nonprofit, nonpartisan RAND Corporation.

Last week, China toughened its language against Taiwan, warning that “independence means war.” A few days prior, the Taiwanese Defense Ministry reported 15 aircraft from the Chinese air force inside its air defense identification zone. This uptick in saber-rattling suggests the military challenge posed by China will likely continue, making it one of the Biden administration’s top priorities. Unlike the Trump administration, with its transactional approach to alliances, the Biden administration may find U.S. interests can be best served through strategic engagement with its allies, on this issue as elsewhere. In particular, part of the military challenge posed by China might be answered by turning to its longtime ally Japan and firming up one of the most intrinsic aspects of the United States-Japan alliance: warfighting.

The Humiliating Art of the Woke Apology

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS CULTURE & LEFT WING TALIBAN

By RICH LOWRY February 8, 2021 6:30

NATIONAL REVIEW

There is one factor that undergirds every aspect of these confessions — fear.

When people look back at our current era of woke intolerance, perhaps the most disturbing artifact will be reporter Donald McNeil’s apology upon his ouster from the New York Times.

The reason for his abject self-abasement is a bit of a mystery. He didn’t grovel to save his job — he was getting fired regardless. Perhaps he felt he needed to make a fulsome apology with an eye to future job prospects, or maybe he believed every word.

Regardless, this sort of self-accusation is not normal . . . except for in totalitarian states and in contemporary America.

France Sees an Existential Threat from American Campuses

Politicians and prominent intellectuals say social theories from the United States on race, gender and post-colonialism are a threat to French identity and the French republic.

By Norimitsu Onishi Feb. 9, 2021Updated   THE NEW YORK TIMES

PARIS — The threat is said to be existential. It fuels secessionism. Gnaws at national unity. Abets Islamism. Attacks France’s intellectual and cultural heritage.

The threat? “Certain social science theories entirely imported from the United States,’’ said President Emmanuel Macron.

French politicians, high-profile intellectuals and journalists are warning that progressive American ideas — specifically on race, gender, post-colonialism — are undermining their society. “There’s a battle to wage against an intellectual matrix from American universities,’’ warned Mr. Macron’s education minister.

MESOPOTAMIA NEWS : THE WORLD FUTURE WILL BE RED CHINA ?

Unification & Harmony – China’s Strategy For Self, Nation, And The World

By Prof. Vera Schwarcz – MEMRI  – Inquiry and Analysis No.1557

Introduction

There are many weapons in China’s arsenal for imposing autocratic control within and for seeking hegemony in the world arena. Two of the ideological tools are the concepts of “unification” and of “harmony.” Both are tooted in Confucian tradition, both are used to strengthen the Chinese Communist Party (CCPT) and the reign of President Xi Jinping. The Chinese regime has been actively promoting the traditional values of obedience to family and state for the past decade. Newspaper articles and editorials as well as publicly displayed propaganda that looks like classical poetry have reversed the attacks on “feudal Confucianism” in the late-Mao era. School children are forced to memorize the Analects (along with passages by Xi Jinping). Their textbooks contain stories about benevolent emperors and kings who unified the country at all cost.1 Behavioral reinforcement for sitting up straight, for not asking contentious questions, for giving the one correct answer to tests (even in highs school and college) reinforce the Communist Party’s claim to be heir to the best of Chinese traditional culture.
