Yamina MK Ayelet Shaked secretly met with Mossad chief Yossi Cohen a week before the March 23rd election, Walla News reported on Wednesday.
The report quoted sources who said that the meeting did not deal with politics but focused on security-legal issues. Shaked served as a member of the inner security cabinet and as Israel’s justice minister from 2015 to 2019.
The purpose of the meeting though so close to elections, did raise eyebrows. Cohen is a known close confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who has touted the Mossad chief as a potential future successor. He is also known to be interested in running for political office once his term ends in June.

The third presidential applicant is a woman – the first ever to run for the position, writes The Syrian Observer.
Faten Ali Nahar has become the first woman to ever run for president in Syria.
Nahar, who is not a known figure in Syria, submitted an application in which she announced that she would be running for president, bringing the number of the candidacy applications submitted to the People’s Assembly to three.
The speaker of the People’s Assembly, Hammoudeh Sabbagh, announced Tuesday that the People’s Assembly had received a notice from the Supreme Constitutional Court that Faten Ali Nahar submitted an application in which she announced running for president.
On Monday, the People’s Assembly received two notices from the Supreme Constitutional Court that Abdullah Salloum Abdullah and Mohammad Firas Yasin Rajjouh submitted applications in which they announced running for president. Nahar is 40-years-old and reportedly from Quneitra province. She graduated as a lawyer and has worked in the position since 2009.
She is the daughter of a retired general, Ali Nahar, who headed the Department of Survey at the Ministry of Defense.
No other information has been published about the hopeful candidate.

On the campaign trail in 1992, Bill Clinton famously promised a cabinet that “looks like America.” By that, Clinton meant he intended to pick a leadership team that reflected the racial and gender diversity of the United States.
That’s a laudable goal insofar as it recognizes the potential contributions of all without regard to race or sex, and it is a goal we share. But it has become a shibboleth at the country’s elite institutions behind which lies a deep hostility to white men. Call it the new systemic racism.
The latest crop of New York Times interns provides a window into the dynamics at work. Of the Times’s 33 interns, one appears to be a white male. Five are men and 27 are women.
So much for looking like America, where census data suggest that white men account for about 30 percent of the population. They account for just 3 percent of Times interns. Men of all races account for 49.2 percent of the U.S. population and just 15 percent of Times interns. The Wall Street Journal’s class of summer interns is similarly unrepresentative of the country at large.

LEADING CHINESE TELECOMMUNICATIONS firm has strongly denied a claim by a newspaper that its service personnel could listen in on calls made by Dutch telephone users, including senior government officials. The report dates from 2010 and was authored by consultancy firm Capgemini on behalf of KPN, one of Holland’s largest telecommunications service providers. The Rotterdam-based firm had hired Capgemini to conduct a risk analysis on whether more equipment should be purchased from Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei. By that time the Chinese company, one of the world’s largest in its field, was already supplying KPN with hardware and software equipment.

Aktualisiert am 20.04.2021-08:04 – FAZ – Die Buchstabiertafel wird reformiert. Die jetzige Version mit den bisherigen Vornamen spiegelt aus Sicht der DIN-Normer die kulturelle Diversität der Bevölkerung nicht genügend wider.
Eine erste Version für die geplante Neufassung der Buchstabiertafel soll bis Herbst vorgelegt werden. Statt Namen sollen künftig Städte als Referenz für die richtige Schreibweise von Wörtern benutzt werden. „Wir sind bei der Überarbeitung der DIN 5009 im Plan und rechnen mit einer Veröffentlichung des Entwurfs im dritten Quartal des Jahres“, sagte Julian Pinnig vom Deutschen Institut für Normung (DIN) der dpa in Berlin. Anschließend folgt eine Kommentierungsphase mit möglichen Änderungen. Die neue Fassung soll dann Mitte kommenden Jahres die zuletzt 1996 geänderte aktuelle Version ersetzen.

Allgemein fühlen sich die Deutschen in der EU wohl. Aber wegen der Corona-Pandemie ist die Skepsis gegenüber ihren Institutionen so stark wie seit zehn Jahren nicht mehr. Besonders die Impfstoffbeschaffung wird kritisiert.
Die Einstellung der Bevölkerung zur Europäischen Union war in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten stabil und schwankend zugleich. Stabil war sie insofern, als die Krisen der Gemeinschaft – die Diskussionen über den Maastricht-Vertrag, den Beitritt der Türkei, die Ost-Erweiterung der EU, das Scheitern des Verfassungsvertrags, die Einführung des Euros, die Staatsschuldenkrise und den Entschluss Großbritanniens, die Union zu verlassen – nichts an der grundsätzlichen Zustimmung der meisten Deutschen zur europäischen Einigung ändern konnten.
Gleichzeitig aber schwankte die Meinung über den konkreten Zustand der EU erheblich, wenn auch in anderer Weise, als oft angenommen wird. So führte die sogenannte „Euro-Krise“ vor rund einem Jahrzehnt nicht etwa dazu, dass die Zustimmung der Deutschen zum Euro zurückging, sondern im Gegenteil deutlich stieg. Offensichtlich waren vielen Bürgern angesichts der Bedrohung die Vorzüge der gemeinsamen Währung erst bewusst geworden. Ein ähnliches Muster zeigte sich auch nach dem Referendum in Großbritannien, das das Vertrauen der europäischen Bürger in die Gemeinschaft eher festigte als erschütterte.

Tehran still regards the full withdrawal of U.S. forces as its ultimate goal, and its Iraqi proxies are more than happy to use escalation for that purpose whenever they can.
“I sent a clear and frank message to Mr. Esmail Qaani [commander of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Quds Force]…the matter is related to us, regardless of other calculations…from now on…please no one talks to us and we won’t listen.” Qais al-Khazali, leader of Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq (AAH), had never talked about Qassem Soleimani, Qaani’s predecessor, in this way—not on national TV. But Soleimani is gone now and things have changed in Iraq, at least to an extent.

- Von Uwe Volkmann FAZ – 20.04.2021-15:09 – Angeblich verfrachtet die „Notbremse“ nur in Bundesrecht, was auf Landesebene so oder ähnlich oft ohnehin schon galt. Doch dieser Formwechsel ist für den Einzelnen und auch für die Demokratie bedrohlicher, als es zunächst scheinen mag. Ein Gastbeitrag.
Als zahlreiche Vertreter der Verfassungsrechtswissenschaft schon früh eine verstärkte Einbindung der Parlamente in die Bewältigung der gegenwärtigen Pandemie forderten, hatten sie sich, ziemlich blauäugig, in etwa Folgendes vorgestellt: Nach einer ersten Phase der Schockstarre im Angesicht einer bis dahin kaum für möglich gehaltenen Bedrohung hätte man nach und nach mehr über das Virus, seine Gefährlichkeit und seine Verbreitungswege gelernt, man hätte sich auf mögliche Wege seiner Bekämpfung besonnen, und man hätte eine ungefähre Vorstellung davon entwickelt, wie weit man um dieser Bekämpfung willen zu gehen bereit ist. Auf dieser Grundlage wäre im Parlament ein entsprechender Gesetzesentwurf eingebracht worden, man hätte dazu Sachverständige verschiedener Disziplinen gehört, im Bundestag wären die aufgeworfenen Fragen dann kontrovers diskutiert worden.
