SOUTH KURDISTAN (IRAQ)

MESOP ANALYSIS BY “FIKRA FORUM” – The Future of the Iraqi Ba’ath Party

By Dani Tahrawi – Dani Tahrawi has served as the editor-in-chief of the Iraq Monitor since 2014.

3 March 2016 – Could one of Iraq’s most notorious political parties make a comeback after thirteen years in exile? This may increasingly become a central question for Middle East analysts, as Ba’athists are claiming their sociopolitical platform of supporting pan-Arab causes defused sectarianism and united Iraqis around nationalistic themes. They also assert that their brand of secularism distanced mainstream Shiites from radical Iranian political currents and helped integrate Iraq’s many minorities into the private and public sectors. MESOP : WHO DID IT ? ERDOGAN OR PKK ? – A Mysterious Pipeline Closure Is Bankrupting Iraqi Kurds

The export pipeline connecting Kurdish oil fields to Turkey has been offline for two weeks, costing Erbil at least $200 million.

By Keith Johnson – March 2, 2016 – FOREIGN POLICY – Iraqi Kurds’ dreams of energy-financed political independence are taking a beating — and not just because of low oil prices.Since the middle of February, Iraqi Kurdistan’s tenuous export link to the outside world has been totally shut down. As recently as January, the Kurds were exporting 600,000 barrels a day in exchange for desperately needed revenue. But the mysterious closure of the pipeline that connects Kurdish refineries to the Turkish coast has brought that number to essentially zero. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=71822

MESOP : THE LBGTI SOCIETY – FEMINISM KISSES ISLAMISM

Duke Prof: Feminist ‘Soft’ Jihad a Force for Peace / The Fantasy World of Ellen McLarney

by Andrew Harrod – March 2, 2016 – Ellen McLarney, who teaches Asian and Middle Eastern studies at Duke, would have you believe that a “pacifist struggle for civil jihad” led by Islamic feminists offers a benign “alternative kind of jihad” to that practiced by Islamist terrorists worldwide. –

She peddled her thesis to about twenty listeners (mostly graduate students) in a February 8 George Washington University lecture, reprising discussion of her recent book, Soft Force: Women in Egypt’s Islamic Awakening. McLarney’s lecture omitted the totalitarian jihadist ideology underlying what she described as a “protracted struggle with non-democratic regimes over matters of human rights.” Read ll http://www.mesop.de/?p=71814

MESOP BACKGROUNDER : Netanyahu & IDF Are Split on the Iran Nuclear Deal / Israel’s leadership is far from unified.

Leore Ben-Chorin – NATIONL INTEREST – March 2, 2016 – Last Tuesday, Secretary of State John Kerry testified before the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations that because of the Iran nuclear deal “there is no longer an existential threat to Israel from Iran.” He asserted that even Israel believed this was true. Kerry was referring to a speech last month by Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot, head of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), in which the Israeli general explained that the deal had “many risks but also opportunities.” Eizenkot also quipped that assuming the worst case scenarios was “as dangerous as imagining the best case scenarios”—a veiled jab at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who previously asserted that the deal is a “historic mistake for the world.” Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=71824

MESOP TODAYS SECURITY UPDATE RUSSIA IN SYRIA & MIDDLE EAST (BY ISW)

by Hugo Spaulding, Franklin Holcomb, and ISW Russia and Ukraine Team

4 March 2016 – Russia redirected criticism over its operations in Syria toward Turkey with the U.S.-backed cessation of hostilities agreement, which came into effect on February 27. Russia has temporarily reduced the intensity of its air campaign following February 27, after weeks of heavily targeting opposition groups in Syria’s northwestern province of Aleppo. ISW assesses that Russia continues to strike mainstream armed opposition groups, however, despite claiming it would only target terrorist groups after the cessation of hostilities. THE GERMAN KURDISH CHAPTER

MESOP – VAN WILGENBURG REPORTS IN GERMAN MAGAZINE „DER SPIEGEL“ : PYD/PKK ACTING AS PUTIN’S GROUND TROOPS IN SYRIA – DRIVE OUT ARABS FROM THEIR VILLAGES

Jenseits der roten Linie / Von Christoph Reuter & Wladimir van Wilgenburg

Volltext : http://www.mesop.de/?p=71820
