MESOP SHORT CUTS : THE PKK & THE PKK MONEY / By Pinar Tremblay

Analysts agree that the PKK has benefited from several situations: the lack of planning during the peace process to control its finances, the oddly intertwined nature of the Turkish underground economy with the PKK’s and organized crime networks’ livelihoods, and the lack of proper cooperation between Turkey and other European countries. Indeed, the PKK is known to accrue income not only from narcotics and other types of smuggling, but also by pressuring Kurds to donate money to it in Europe; it also makes money through legitimate businesses, such as media outlets. In addition, Turkey has failed to develop a system to curtail the group’s global income sources.  Read more http://www.mesop.de/?p=72882

MESOP TODAYS OPINION : The United States must not aid & abet Iranian money laundering

By Ed Royce April 5  – Washington Post – The writer, a Republican from California, is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Iran has yet to see the economic growth it wants from President Obama’s nuclear deal, and it’s demanding additional concessions — above and beyond the agreement — in return for nothing. Specifically, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei wants the United States to end sanctions aimed at curbing Iran’s funding for terrorism and illicit weapons so Iran can gain access to the U.S. financial system, where the majority of international business is conducted. MESOP TODAYS ANALYSIS : Distract Deceive Destroy

By Maks Czuperski, John E. Herbst, Eliot Higgins, Frederic Hof &  Ben Nimmo

While President Putin announced the end of Russia’s military operations with much fanfare, the modest forces withdrawn thereafter suggest that by no means is Russia’s military role in Syria over.
Using digital forensic research and open source investigation methods, Distract Deceive Destroy presents the reality of Russia’s Syrian campaign: Russia launched air strikes on hospitals, water treatment plants, and mosques. Russia used cluster bombs. Russia almost exclusively targeted non-ISIS targets—Truths that Russia will not admit, but truths that must be understood when negotiating with Russia as a potential partner. WEST KURDISTAN (SYR IA)

MESOP Report: Russia withdrawal due to disappointment with Iran and Hezbollah

By YASSER OKBI/ MAARIV HASHAVUA – JERUSALEM POST –  6 Apr 2016 – Russian forces did not receive the backing on the ground that it expected, and the leadership had deep differences with the Iranians on the direction of the conflict.

Russia decided to partially withdrawal its troop from Syria due to Moscow’s disappointment over failures by pro-regime Iranian and Hezbollah forces to achieve victories against opposition forces fighting to topple the Assad government, the Saudi news-site Elaph reported Monday night. According to the report, Russia had been concerned about air support and bombed regions where Iranian and Hezbollah troops were located to face off Syrian opposition elements and Islamic State militants. However, Russia reportedly did not receive mutual coverage on the ground. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=72896

MESOP : LAVROV’S PROPOSALS – UN Security Council rejects Russia’s proposal to include PYD/PKK Kurds in Geneva Syrian talks

6 April 2016 – UNITED NATIONS,— Russia’s proposal to include Kurds in Geneva Syrian talks was vetoed by the UN Security Council’s Western members, UN envoy Vitaly Churkin reported, saying this contradicts UN resolutions on Syrian reconciliation and ignores calls for inclusive talks. Churkin warned that if the Syrian Kurds do not in the peace process, international efforts to bring peace to Syria could be undermined. “We are concerned that the Syrian Kurds, historically woven into the social fabric of the country, still have not been invited to the Geneva talks,” he said, pointing out that by not inviting the Kurds, the West is violating the spirit of inclusiveness for the Syrian talks in the UN Security Council resolutions on Syria. By Prof. Efraim Inbar, April 6, 2016 – BESA Center Perspectives Paper No. 338, April 6, 2016

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The desire of the international community to end the Syrian civil war is offset by the inability of any individual party to enforce its preferred solution. The conflict, which is likely to continue for some time, has solidified the centrality of Russia and Iran in regional affairs. Israel’s options are limited.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=72898

NORTH KURDISTAN (TURKEY)

MESOP BACKGROUNDER: Is Turkey’s lax oversight keeping PKK flush with funds? (APO OCALAN – THE NON-SMOKER)

In our quest to find the best tea in Istanbul, my friends and I recently stopped by Van Sofrasi, a restaurant chain named after the eastern province of Van famous for its lavish morning feasts. Unfortunately, as it turns out, we found that it’s merely an urban myth that the smuggled mahogany-colored tea from Iran and Syria is the best.
