Walid Phares (Arabic: وليد فارس‎ IPA: [waˈliːd ˈfaːres]) is an American scholar of Lebanese Maronite Christian origins. He is a professor at National Defense University in Washington, D.C. and a commentator on global terrorism and Middle Eastern affairs.

Phares is also a prominent adherent and promoter of the Sharia Law Conspiracy Theory, in which he believes Muslim Americans seek to subvert and overthrow the U.S. Government and Constitution with Islamic law. [1]

During the 1980s, Phares, a Maronite Christian, trained Lebanese militants in ideological beliefs justifying the war against Lebanon’s Muslim and Druze factions, according to former colleagues. Phares, they say, advocated the hard-line view that Lebanon’s Christians should work toward creating a separate, independent Christian enclave.

Phares is in close relation with the “Foundation for Defense of Democracies”.

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP INSIGHT PKK STALINISTS FIGHT CHRISTIANS : Assyrian leader accuses PYD (PKK)  of monopolizing power in Syria’s north

ARA NEWS  23 March 2016 – QAMISHLI – Since it started to control much swathes of territory in Syria’s north and northeast, the Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) and its political leadership of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) have been major powers in the region, especially after expelling the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) from key cities and towns. However, many Kurds, Arabs and Assyrians accuse this force of usurping power in Syria’s Kurdish region of Rojava. Johnny Misso, head of the Assyrian World Council (AWC) on Tuesday accused the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) of monopolizing power in areas under the control of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) in northern Syria. “We have released an urgent call to the Human Rights Council about the violations committed against Assyrians in Syria,” Misso said in a press statement. “Thousands of Assyrians living in northern Syria are exposed to attacks by the PYD-linked YPG forces,” he said. MIDDLE EAST

MESOP BACKGROUNDER : Inside Hamas, a bitter and very personal battle for control”

(Avi Isacharoff, Times of Israel) – 23 March 2016 – “[Yahya] Sinwar’s release from prison wrought a change in the structure of the entire leadership. Sinwar began asserting himself as Hamas’s Number One man in Gaza: One of the founders of the Izz a-Din al-Qassam military brigades, he had tried to scuttle the Shalit deal, even though it wound up securing his freedom after 22 years, because he felt it made too many concessions. That helped him solidify the respect of all Hamas’s members. Sinwar has worked to change Hamas’s priorities. For him, Gaza is not a stepping-stone in a wider strategy of taking over the West Bank and the PLO, as it is for [Khaled] Mashaal. Rather, Gaza is a separate and sanctified goal: the first and only entity where the Muslim Brotherhood’s doctrine held sway. The members of the political bureau abroad see a takeover of the entire Palestinian leadership as an end that justifies any means, including concessions in Gaza if required. Not so, for Sinwar. Another strategic issue on which the two camps are divided has to do with the clash of civilizations in the Middle East and the fight between the Sunnis and the Shi’ites. While Mashaal and his group made clear their reservations regarding the ‘Shi’ite axis’ as far back as 2011, Sinwar and his comrades in the Gaza military wing refused to part ways with their friends in Tehran and Damascus.” http://www.mesop.de/?p=72428
