MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY BY JENNIFER CAFARELLA (ISW)

WHY THE MOST DANGEROUS GROUP IN SYRIA ISN’T ISIS

(CNN) Hardly a day goes by without news of the progress being made in the war on ISIS in Iraq and Syria. In recent months, American-backed forces have secured much of the Syrian-Turkish border, recaptured Ramadi, and stemmed the flow of fighters and supplies to the terror group’s capital cities of Raqqa and Mosul. But momentum is not the same as winning, and the U.S. has fallen into a number of traps in Iraq and Syria — the most deadly of which has been set by al Qaeda.

Jabhat al-Nusra, al Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate, is more dangerous than ISIS — and while the two groups share the common goal of establishing a global caliphate, they are using different means to achieve it. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=71941

MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY : HOW IRAN IS BUILDING ITS SYRIAN HEZBOLLAH

PolicyWatch 2580 – March 8, 2016 – By Phillip Smyth – Syrian Shiite fighters increasingly show loyalty to Tehran, over even the Assad regime, marking an important shift in the wartime dynamic. In May 2014, Gen. Hossein Hamedani of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that Iran had formed “a second Hezbollah in Syria.” Although Hamedani, who was later killed in October 2015 as part of the ongoing Aleppo offensive, may have been referring to the many militias that compose Bashar al-Assad’s multiethnic and cross-sectarian National Defense Forces (NDF), he was likely hinting at a far more specific Shiite-focused effort. Iraqi Kurdistan officials sought emergency financial aid from Iran

SULAIMANI, Kurdistan region ‘Iraq’,— Facing a massive financial shortfall, Kurdish authorities in Iraqi Kurdistan sought emergency economic assistance last year from Iran, according to Kurdish and Iranian sources. The discussion stalled, the sources said, because Tehran demanded a share of Kurdish oil revenues.

Nazim Dabbagh, the Kurdish region’s representative to Iran, told VOA that the subject was discussed during the visit of Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani to Tehran during the Munich Security Conference in October. www.mesop.de

MESOP REFLECTION : Turkey & the PKK – War on Several Fronts / THE KURDISH PLAYER “NAKI”

THE DAYAN CENTER : In this article from the February 2016 issue of Beehive: Middle East Social Media, Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak analyzes the battle in Turkish social media between Turkey and the PKK.

A prominent example of ongoing widespread public discourse on social networks in Turkey was triggered by a Turkish military operation in the town of Cizre in Şırnak province. Official reports from the Turkish army said that the rebels had adopted urban warfare techniques, and were attempting to prevent the movement of Turkish ground forces by digging trenches and building obstructive embankments in streets of the town. Moreover, the rebels used underground tunnels that allowed them to move easily and surprise the Turkish army. These tactics made it difficult for the army to maneuver in the field.
