COUNTERING RUSSIAN AND ASSAD REGIME RESPONSES TO SAFE ZONES / By Anna Borshchevskaya

PolicyWatch 2561 – February 17, 2016

For such zones to succeed, they must be backed with militarily enforced no-fly zones and a persuasive response to Moscow’s inevitable small-scale violations and disinformation campaign. On February 13, Russian prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said in Munich that Russia has no intention of ending its bombing campaign against the Syrian rebels. “They are all bandits and terrorists,” he told Time in an exclusive interview. Earlier, on February 11, Russia’s deputy foreign minister, Oleg Syromolotov, informed the Interfax news agency that the Kremlin will consider any attempts by the U.S.-led coalition to establish safe zones on the Turkish-Syrian border without United Nations authorization and Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s permission “an act of direct military intervention.” This statement came as no surprise. MESOP TODAYS OPINION : The Sexual Misery of the Arab World / By Kamel Daoud – New York Times

AFTER TAHRIR & COLOGNE (GERMANY)

– 18 Feb 2016 – ORAN, Algeria — After Tahrir came Cologne. After the square came sex. The Arab revolutions of 2011 aroused enthusiasm at first, but passions have since waned. Those movements have come to look imperfect, even ugly: For one thing, they have failed to touch ideas, culture, religion or social norms, especially the norms relating to sex. Revolution doesn’t mean modernity.Read all : http://www.mesop.de/?p=71360

MESOP : NO INVASION POSSIBLE !

Turkey’s bluff – By Ömer Taspinar – Februray 2016 – Todays Zaman

There is a sense of déjà vu in reports that the Turkish army may be about to engage in a military incursion in Syria.

Similar reports had surfaced last year as well. Back then, the story was that Turkey was preparing to set up a safe zone in Syria along a 70-mile stretch of Turkey’s border with a 20-mile deep incursion into the Syrian border. It is hard to take the idea of a unilateral Turkish incursion in Syria seriously for a number of reasons. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=71374

MESOP OPINION BY MURAT YETKİN / HURRIYET

Will the Turkish army be deployed in Syria?

Unless Turkey is directly attacked by Syrian forces, it is not very likely that the Turkish army will be deployed in Syria.
I’m not talking about a few shells falling on the Turkish side of the border or shots fired at Turkish patrols or border stations, or perhaps even the incidental shooting down of planes; after all, there are already set and announced rules of engagement for such incursions. The Turkish military responds to such incidents immediately, as in the cases of the last few days. The military has been careful to make the point that all artillery fired on positions across the Turkish border of the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the military wing of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD), have been responses to PYD incursions.
