MESOP Syria Feature: US to Opposition — Drop Conditions for Talks, Such as Ceasefires

By Scott Lucas – eaworldview – 9 Feb 2016 – The US told Syria’s opposition on Monday that it should drop conditions — such as ceasefires, detainee releases, and access to aid for besieged areas — for “proximity talks” with the Assad regime.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said that the issues should be part of the discussions:

By being able to have talks, hopefully, ideally, you can start to get at the issues that are most of prime importance, which is a cease-fire and humanitarian access.It’s hard to do that when you’re not even having a dialogue. It’s certainly hard to do that when, as we saw, people are being bombed. MESOP Syria Daily: Kurds Take Rebel Territory in Northwest

February 09 – by Scott Lucas – EAWORLDVIEW – Taking advantage of Russian airstrikes and a nearby regime-Hezbollah-Iranian offensive, Kurdish forces have taken rebel territory in northwest Syria.

The Kurdish militia YPG and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces moved into the town of Deir Jamal, in northern Syria on the Turkish border, and neighboring villages on Monday. While it is unclear if the Kurdish operations have been discussed with the Russians, who began their bombing of opposition areas from September 30, the advance is close to the offensive that has put pressure on rebels north of Aleppo city.Deir Jamal is south of the key border town of Azaz, west of the rebel frontline at Mare’ against the Islamic State, and north of Mayer and the regime of al-Zahraa, captured last week by the foreign-led offensive. Russia’s four month long air campaign has set conditions for the encirclement of Aleppo. Pro-regime forces backed by heavy Russian airstrikes severed one of two opposition supply lines into Aleppo City from the Turkish border on February 3 when they pushed northwest of the city to reestablish a regime supply line to the besieged regime towns of Nubl and Zahra’a. Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps fighters and Iranian-backed Shi’a militia forces played a prominent role in the offensive, demonstrating the lethality of combined Russian air and Iranian ground operations against the opposition in Syria. BY CALEB WEISS | February 8th, 2016 | weiss.caleb2@gmail.com | @Weissenberg7 – A US-made M1 Abrams tank can be seen with the flag of the Iranian-backed militia Kata’ib Sayyid al Shuhada. – Kata’ib Sayyid al Shuhada (KSS), an Iranian-backed Shia militia which operates in both Syria and Iraq, has been spotted using a US-made M1 Abrams tank in a recently released video. The video, which is a montage of different militias within the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU’s), a Shia-led collection of militias in Iraq, has been shared on several PMU social media outlets.Around the 16 second mark of the video, a KSS flag can clearly be seen atop an Abrams. It is unclear exactly where the militia is located during this clip, but it is likely within Iraq’s central Salahadin province, where KSS has done a considerable amount of fighting against the Islamic State.
