MESOP TODAYS QUOTATION

YPG advances in N. Syria, Ankara’s red lines crossed

The pro-Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) have extended their reach to the west of the Euphrates, an issue that is regarded as a “red line” for Ankara, and have their eye on uniting the cantons in the north of Syria to form a unitary Kurdish entity, according to a report by a Turkish current affairs weekly. In an interview with the Aksiyon weekly, Şervan Derweş, the spokesperson for the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), largely made up of YPG forces with contingents of Arab tribesmen from northeast Syria, expressed his anger at Turkey and claimed that the YPG had already advanced into territory west of the Euphrates. MESOP TODAYS RELEVANT COMMENTARIES ABOUT THE GENEVA FAKE – By Al Monitor – Foreign Policy – Al JazeeraTOP OF THE AGENDA – Syrian Peace Talks Suspended

The United Nations temporarily suspended peace talks (NYT) aimed at ending the war in Syria on Wednesday as Syrian government forces escalated an offensive on Aleppo (Reuters). The UN mediator Staffan de Mistura suggested that the government’s failure to allow food and medicine into rebel-held towns had prevented any serious discussions. Meanwhile, world leaders launched a donor conference (BBC) in London with a plea for billions of dollars in aid for Syrian refugees. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70871

MESOP : OPINION BY DAVID IGNATIUS – Washington Post – The Islamic State is still on the rise

5 Feb 2016 – Republican and Democratic presidential candidates should be able to agree on one stark foreign policy reality: The tide hasn’t turned in the war against the Islamic State. In the 18 months that the United States has been working to “degrade and ultimately destroy” the group, it has grown to become a global force that can strike targets in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. The self-declared “caliphate” that in June 2014 was localized in Iraq and Syria now has nearly 50 affiliates or supporting groups in 21 countries. It has declared 33 “official provinces” in 11 of those countries. Reda all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70884

MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY – THE PITFALLS OF RELYING ON KURDISH FORCES TO COUNTER ISIS

Feb 3, 2016 – Patrick Martin – Institute for the study of War

American over-reliance on Kurdish forces as the primary ground partner in the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) threatens the long-term success of the anti-ISIS campaign. The U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition currently provides extensive military support to Kurds in both Iraq and Syria through weapons shipments, advisory missions, and close air support. This cooperation has enabled Kurdish forces to seize large swaths of territory from ISIS throughout 2015, including the majority of the Syrian-Turkish border and key terrain in the vicinity of Mosul. U.S. President Barack Obama lauded the gains as a demonstration of what can be accomplished “when [the U.S.] has an effective partner on the ground.” This partnership, however, faces two fundamental pitfalls that challenge broader U.S. national security objectives. MESOP : MIDDLE EAST – PUTIN, ASSAD & GEOPOLITICS

FEBRUARY 1, 2016 BY SPYRIDON A. PLAKOUDAS / Middle East Review of International Affairs (MERIA) – Vol. 19, No. 3

The Russian military intervention in Syria since September 2015 has sparked spirited debates in Western policymaking and intellectual circles about the genuine motives behind the Kremlin’s unexpected decision. Various monocausal explanations have been propounded, which, however, do not interpret this intervention in either an objective or systematic way. This article aspires to examine the Russian military intervention in Syria in an unbiased, innovative, and thorough way by adding the crucial geopolitical dimension. It will show that, without discounting the other incentives (e.g., support for the only Arab ally), this operation intends primarily to restore Russia’s status as a world power in the twenty-first century. MESOP ANALYSIS : Downing of the Russian Plane and its Consequences: “A Great Miracle Happened There”

MDC Junior Researcher Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak examines how the diplomatic crisis between Turkey and Russia has caused Ankara to reevaluate its foreign policy, especially towards Israel, and the reaction on Turkish social media. From the December 2015 issue of Beehive: Middle East Social Media. – Author:  Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak

The downing of a Russian plane that penetrated Turkish airspace on November 24 was the focal point of discussions on Turkish social networking sites (SNS) in recent weeks. The crisis between Turkey and Russia that arose following the incident forced Turkey to re-assess its international diplomatic situation, due to its dependence on Russia for energy (54.76% of Turkish gas comes from Russia),commerce, and tourism.[1]  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=70900
