MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY :  By Semih Idiz – Al Monitor  – Turkey faces multiple dilemmas in Syria

1 June 2016 – Turkey’s inability to produce a realistic strategy toward Syria and to coordinate its policy with its allies is coming home to roost, leaving it facing multiple dilemmas that are unlikely to be resolved soon. Ankara’s war with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and its related effort to prevent Kurds from gaining ground in northern Syria remains Turkey’s main problems. This complicates, if not prevents, headway by the US-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS) in the region.  Read all: http://www.mesop.de/?p=74548

MESOP “THE GREATEST SCANDAL” : Why Major Powers Can’t Manage to Air Drop Supplies to Syria / Senator McCain

By Howard LaFranchi – Christian Science Monitor –  2016-06-01 00:43 GMT – Washington — The inability of major powers to implement a modest aid airdrop to more than 500,000 Syrians, set to begin June 1, suggests their unwillingness to intervene forcefully in the unfolding humanitarian crisis. The US, Russia, and other outside forces involved in Syria had agreed last month to begin airdrops of food and other emergency supplies if overland aid convoys continued to be stopped. MESOP Arguments & Analysis –  “Revisiting Train-and-Equip in Syria to Clear the Manbij Pocket” (Andrea Taylor and Aaron Stein, War on the Rocks)

“For the immediate task of ‘defeating and degrading’ ISIL, the SDF’s utility as a ground force in Kurdish-majority areas has proved to be a successful formula. The SDF has expressed a sustained interest in taking the cities of Manbij and Jarablus from ISIL, before continuing west to link up with the isolated PYD run territory of Efrin in Syria’s northeast. It is unclear if the YPG has the requisite strength to fight a two-front offensive against ISIL, on its western front line as well as its 115-mile front line between Margadeh and Ain Issa.  Read all : http://www.mesop.de/?p=74522

Mosul After the Islamic State: The Kurdistan Region’s Strategy / By Renad Mansour  –  El-Erian Fellow –  Middle East Center  – Article May 20, 2016 – Carnegie Endowment

In anticipation of the eventual power vacuum in Mosul, Kurdish forces have begun to plan for what comes next in the city, only an hour’s drive from Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan’s capital. The liberation of Mosul, Iraq’s second-largest city, remains a top priority for most actors involved in the campaign against the so-called Islamic State. MESOP TODAYS OPINION : “Brawl in Turkish National Assembly Indicates Deeper Trouble” (Christopher Gandrud, Political Violence at a Glance)

“We tend to see more legislative violence in parliaments where legislators find it difficult to make credible commitments to follow peaceful legislative bargains. Just like in international conflict, when one side doesn’t believe that the other side will uphold their peacefully bargained commitments, MPs may choose violence as a last-ditch effort to achieve their goals.  Read all : http://www.mesop.de/?p=74520

MESOP EPITAPH : OUR  ONE & ONLY BERNARD LEWIS – BY AYAAN HIRSI ALI  – VICTOR DAVID HANSON et.al.

  • THE BIRTH OF THE MODERN WORLD –

National Review asked friends and admirers of Bernard Lewis to say some words about the man and his achievements to mark the occasion of his 100th birthday today.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali Bernard Lewis once asked me, Is there anyone who as a leader has really impressed you? And I said, well, you do. He smiled and said he was flattered, but asked about a political leader. And I had to think about it.  –  He said the fact that you have to think about it so long is a mark of our time. Bernard Lewis was born in 1916, into a world writhing with conflict from all corners. A world poised for a century of war, of revolt, of treaties, of fighting for and against modern values. He watched as, from the ashes of destruction, there rose a world transformed: a world embarking farther down the path for freedom, equality, and prosperity than was previously thought possible. Bernard Lewis watched the birth of the modern world.  Read all: http://www.mesop.de/?p=74516

THE GERMAN KURDISH CHAPTER

MESOP “POINT OF VIEW” :  Von Henryk M. Broder –  Die doppelte Frau Özoguz

Volltext : http://www.mesop.de/?p=74546
