Russia’s next move – A terrorist group linked to the Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for suicide bombings in Tartus and Jableh in Syria on May 23 that killed more than 150 civilians and wounded more than 200 others. Maxim Suchkov points out that the attack in Tartus occurred deep inside government-controlled territory. Russia maintains a naval base in Tartus and an air base and reconnaissance center in Khmeimim in the Latakia region. KurdWatch, May 31, 2016—On May 24 and 25, 2016, the Asayiş, the Democratic Union Party’s (PYD) security service, forcibly recruited young men at random for the PYD’s People’s Defense Units (YPG) at several checkpoints in ʿAfrin as well as Raju, which is located twenty-five kilometers northwest of ʿAfrin and in Basuta, about eight kilometers south of the city. PUK council chief says party will accept Nawshirwan Mustafa as leader
The chief of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) central council stated that most members of the PUK will welcome the leadership of Gorran (Change Movement) leader, Nawshirwan Mustafa, over the PUK. – Adil Murad predicted that the PUK and Gorran would emerge into a party. Gorran was formed after Mustafa, a former PUK leading member, and a number of leading members of the PUK left the party. Murad told VOA that the recent agreement between the PUK and Gorran was the result of negotiations between the two parties since 2012, demanding for the convergence of the two parties. PUK Leader Jalal Talabani suffered a heart stroke two years ago and he cannot lead the party any longer. Murad went on to say that no action will be successful in Kurdistan Region without cooperation with the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party and reiterated that the PUK-Gorran agreement is not an attempt against the KDP. www.mesop.de

| Bulbul: Einwohner schicken Angeklagte an die Front
KurdWatch, 30. Mai 2016 – Am 26. Mai 2016 hat die von der Partei der Demokratischen Union (PYD) kontrollierte Bewegung für eine Demokratische Gesellschaft (TEV‑DEM) im Zentrum des rund dreißig Kilometer nördlich von ʿAfrin liegenden Ortes Bulbul eine öffentliche Versammlung organisiert, bei der die Bevölkerung aufgerufen wurde, zwei Angeklagte durch Abstimmung zu verurteilen. Zwei ältere Familienväter wurden beschuldigt, die Volksverteidigungseinheiten (YPG) der PYD beschimpft zu haben. Abgestimmt wurde über drei mögliche Urteile: sechsmonatige Haftstrafe, ideologische Erziehung oder Verschickung an die Front. Einer Mitteilung der PYD‑nahen Nachrichtenagentur Hawar (ANHA) zufolge stimmten die versammelten Einwohner für den dritten Vorschlag. Die Verurteilten sollen demnach an die Front geschickt werden, um dort selbst die Tapferkeit von YPG und Frauenverteidigungseinheiten (YPJ) zu erleben. Ob sie auch an Kampfhandlungen teilnehmen sollen, wird in der Mitteilung nicht deutlich. |
ʿAmuda: Sechzehnjähriger vermutlich für die YPG rekrutiert
| KurdWatch, 30. Mai 2016 – Am 23. Mai 2016 hat der Asayiş, der Sicherheitsdienst der Partei der Demokratischen Union (PYD), den sechzehnjährigen Zinar Madschdal Qasim aus seinem Elternhaus in dem wenige Kilometer südwestlich von ʿAmuda liegenden Dorf Karanku entführt. Die Mitnahme des Jungen wurde nicht begründet. Die Angehörigen vermuten, dass er für die Volksverteidigungseinheiten (YPG) der PYD rekrutiert wurde, da am selben Tag zahlreiche junge Männer in der Umgebung von ʿAmuda zwangsrekrutiert wurden, unter anderem in den Dörfern Karanku, Gir Ziro, Gir Ziyarat, Tabaqa, Dschauhara und Tall Habasch.
