First Look: Pictures of U.S. Commandos on the Front Lines in Syria
Several of the commandos also wear Kurdish People’s Protection Unit patches on their uniforms. Known as the YPG, the organization has long been accused by the Turkish government of being the Syrian arm of Turkey’s Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK. Washington also considers the PKK a terrorist organization, but denies Ankara’s claims that the groups are the same. Either way, the patches will likely cause a stir in Turkey, and among local Arab populations distrustful of the Kurdish fighters.

Taken by a photographer working for Agence France-Presse, the photos show a cadre of American troops in an unarmored Toyota pickup truck mounted with a grenade launcher. The Assad regime’s use of food as a weapon has been a central feature of the Syrian civil war. Regime forces have used “surrender or starve” tactics to great effect. Humanitarian supply efforts have repeatedly been obstructed by regime forces, as well as by the Islamic State (IS), some rebel groups, and criminal elements. Authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran executed five Kurdish rights activists in the northwestern Urmia city, officials and local activists confirmed on Friday. The Kurdish rights activists Naji Kiwan, Ali Kurdian, Haidar Ramini, Nadir Muhamadi and Ruhman Rashidi were arrested on Wednesday on charges of “conspiring against the Islamic Republic of Iran”.

TEHRAN – 28 May 2016 – A Kurdish member of the Iranian parliament has accused President Hasan Ruhani of failing to keep the promises he made to Kurds in Iran.
In a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce in the Kurdish province of Sanandaj, MP Mohsin Bigleri explained that Iranian president promised during his presidential campaign to appoint local figures to local administrative positions in the Iranian Kurdish provinces, “but he failed to keep his promise.”Despite having many qualified local people as well as favorable geographic position, the Kurdish province and its people are marginalized by Ruhani’s government, the Kurdish MP says. www.mesop.de
