MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY : A NEW FORMULA IN THE BATTLE FOR FALLUJAH

By Michael Knights – Michael Knights is a Lafer Fellow with The Washington Institute – Al Jazeera – May 25, 2016

The campaign is Iraq’s latest attempt to push militia and coalition forces into a single battlespace, and lessons from past efforts have seemingly improved their tactics. On May 22, the Iraqi government announced the opening of the long-awaited battle of Fallujah, the city only 30 miles west of Baghdad that has been fully under the control of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group for the past 29 months. Fallujah was a critical hub for al-Qaeda in Iraq and later ISIL in the decade before ISIL’s January 2014 takeover. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=74338

MESOP TODAYS ANALYSIS : THE SOUTHERN FRONT IN SYRIA

By Ehud Yaari –  Ehud Yaari is a Lafer International Fellow with The Washington Institute and a Middle East commentator for Israel’s Channel Two television.

Foreign Affairs –  May 24, 2016 –  For the past two years, Washington has focused its attention on northern Syria, where it has attempted to strengthen the Syrian Democratic Forces and rout the so-called Islamic State (also called ISIS). It has paid much less attention to southern Syria. That is a mistake; the United States has an opportunity there to consolidate and expand upon recent rebel gains.  Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=74367

MESOP HEADLINE TODAY :  INDICTMENT FOR BREACH OF HEALTHCARE  AGAINST ISRAEL ! – NOT AGAINST PUTIN & ASSAD WHO BOMB HOSPITALS

Swedish delegate joins UK, France, Germany and other EU states today in singling out Israel at the 2016 WHO world assembly

GENEVA, May 25 — The UK, France, Germany and other EU states voted today for a UN resolution, co-sponsored by the Arab group of states and the Palestinian delegation, that singled out Israel at the annual assembly of the World Health Organization (WHO) as the only violator of “mental, physical and environmental health,” – By contrast, the UN assembly did not address Syrian hospitals being bombed by Syrian and Russian warplanes, or millions of Yemenis denied access to food and water by the Saudi-led bombings and blockade, nor did it pass a resolution on any other country in the world. Out of 24 items on the meeting’s agenda, only one, Item No. 19 against Israel, focused on a specific country. http://www.mesop.de/?p=74360

WEST KURDISTAN (SYRIA)

MESOP TODAYS OPINION : HOW HAS WASHINGTON TO FOCUS ON MOSCOWS INTERESTS ? / THE PKK COULD SPARK TURKISH-RUSSIAN MILITARY ESCALATION / THE RUSSIAN PKK TIES !

PolicyWatch 2621 – May 25, 2016 –  By Andrew J. Tabler and Soner Cagaptay –  Andrew J. Tabler is the Martin J. Gross Fellow in The Washington Institute’s Program on Arab Politics. Soner Cagaptay is the Institute’s Beyer Family Fellow and director of its Turkish Research Program. Russia and Syria’s dormant ties with the group have been reawakened by the civil war, raising the prospect of dangerous weapons proliferation and potential escalation into direct conflict with Turkey. On May 14, media close to the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) posted video of one of the group’s members downing a Cobra helicopter over southeastern Turkey using a Russian-made man-portable air-defense system (MANPADS), which he fired from the Iraqi border region. PYD/PKK Kurds Play Down Talk of Offensive on ISIS’s Raqqa

May 26 – 20016 – REUTERS / MESOP . – The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have played down talk of an offensive to recapture the city of Raqqa, the Islamic State’s center in northern Syria. But SDF spokesman Talal Silo said on Thursday, “The current battle is only to liberate the area north of Raqqa. Currently there is no preparation…to liberate Raqqa, unless as part of a campaign which will come after this campaign has finished,” Read all : http://www.mesop.de/?p=74352

MESOP BACKGROUNDER : U.S.-backed Syrian militias not preparing assault on Islamic State capital: PYD/PKK spokesman Talal Silo

Reuters/Stringer – 26 May 2016 – U.S.-backed Syrian militias are not preparing an assault on Islamic State’s de facto Syrian capital of Raqqa at present, a militia spokesman said, indicating the limited scope of a new offensive in nearby areas where fighting raged on Wednesday. Movements by the fighters in the U.S.-backed Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance, and leaflets dropped on Raqqa urging its citizens to leave had given rise to speculation that they were about to attack the city. MESOP INSIGHT : Russia Suspends Airstrikes Against Syrian Rebel Groups

26 May 2016 – The Russian government announced yesterday that it would temporarily suspend airstrikes against Jabhat al-Nusra to allow other Syrian rebel groups to distance themselves from the organization. The move comes a week after Russia proposed joint airstrikes with the United States targeting rebel groups that violate the partial ceasefire; the United States refused the proposal, which would have initiated strikes yesterday. A spokesman for the Russian Defense Ministry said the reprieve was granted after rebels agreed to halt “provocative” attacks against Assad regime targets, but senior rebel leaders disputed this, saying rebel groups are not in contact with Russian forces. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with foreign ministers from the Gulf states today in Moscow to discuss the situation in Syria. In particular, the role of rebel groups Ahrar al-Sham and Jaish al-Islam, which participate in the Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee but which Russia considers terrorist groups, was expected to be a subject of discussion.

MESOP CRITIQUE:  WESTERN FEMINIST & LBGTI CULTURE STRICTLY AGAINST ISRAEL

Why Are Some Feminists So Preoccupied with Israel? – by Phyllis Chesler  •  May 24, 2016 – Originally published under the title “Feminist Totally Occupied by Palestine.”

This month, a British feminist historian, Dr. Catherine Hall, refused a half-million dollars because the money is connected to an Israel-based foundation. The Dan David Foundation had absolutely no trouble finding two other European feminist historians (Drs. Arlette Farge and Dr. Inga Clendinnen) and awarding them the distinguished prize. The matter is a curious one. First, because Hall herself not only declined the prize; her supporters, the British Committee for the Universities of Palestine, released the news of her rejection, which it described as “a significant endorsement of the campaign to end ties with Israeli institutions.” Hall and her supporters/handlers clearly want credit for her “politically correct” sacrifice. Perhaps a pro-Islamic or a British anti-Zionist foundation will soon find a way to reward her. Perhaps others will then follow suit. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=74355
