MESOP TODAYS OPINION : HOW TO DEAL WITH ERDOGAN ?

Erdogan vs. the world  – By Semih Idiz – AL MONITOR  21 May 2016

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ouster of Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to clear his own path to absolute power has left many wondering what effect the move will have on Turkey’s foreign policy orientation and its relations with the West in particular. Given the way Erdogan has been ratcheting up his angry anti-Western rhetoric, some fear that Ankara’s ties with the United States and Europe will remain strained for the foreseeable future over a number of seemingly irreconcilable issues. MESOP TODAYS COMMENTARY : A CAPITALIST STORY  – Turkey’s Journey from Secularism to Islamization: A Capitalist Story Featured

By Halil Karaveli – Halil Karaveli is a Senior Fellow at the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute & Silk Road Studies Program Joint Center, where he heads the Turkey Initiative and is Editor of the Turkey Analyst.  – May 13, 2016

The dynamics of capitalist development have played a much more central role for Turkey’s journey from secularism to religious conservatism – and before that for the Kemalist break with Islam – than what is generally recognized. During the context of the Cold War, capitalist development and Islamization went hand in hand, as religious conservatism neutralized the challenge of the left and labor. Today, neoliberal globalization provides impetus for Islamization. Raising “pious generations” – who are “traditional,” not rebellious – is essential for sustaining neo-liberalism. An explicitly “religious” constitution, in which reference is made to God, will serve to mask that it is capital that reigns supreme. Ultimately, the survival of secularism requires that the economic order that depends on continued Islamization is called into question. Read all http://www.mesop.de/?p=74274

MESOP TODAYS BACKGROUNDER : A STRATEGIC CONSPIRACY BY IRAN & PKK/PYD WITH PUK AGAINST KURDISH UNITY

Syrian Kurds Divided on Relations With Iraqi Kurds

By Wladimir van Wilgenburg – ARA News – 2016-05-24 – Two major Kurdish parties, the Change Movement (Gorran) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) reached an agreement on May 17, in order to counterbalance the dominance of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) in Iraqi Kurdistan. The Syrian Kurdish parties are divided on the issue, depending on their political affiliations.

The Syrian Kurdish parties united in the Kurdish National Council (KNC) backed by the KDP reject the agreement, while the local Auto-Administration set up by the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and it’s allies support the agreement. “On the level of Kurdistan, we support legitimate movements of our people in other parts of Kurdistan to achieve their rights,” the agreement said about Kurds living in other countries. MESOP STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVES – PUTIN’S WIDER STRATEGY

Russia & Turkey Escalate: Russia’s Threat to NATO Goes Beyond Eastern Europe / THE PKK PARTICIPATION AGAINST EUROPE

May 23, 2016 – Chris Kozak  (ISW)  –  By Genevieve Casagrande, Christopher Kozak, and Franklin Holcomb with Kimberly Kagan, Nataliya Bugayova, and Jennifer Cafarella

Key Takeaway: Russia is waging a multi-front campaign against Turkey in order to weaken NATO in line with its strategic objectives. The use of a high-end Soviet-era MANPADS  against a Turkish helicopter in southeastern Turkey on May 13, 2016 could indicate that Russia is providing meaningful military support to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) insurgency. The incident, if indeed a Russian escalation, is yet another Russian infringement of a sovereign NATO partner. Russia targeted the same pressure point by overflying Turkey with combat aircraft in November 2015, leading Turkish President Recep Erdogan to authorize the shoot down of a Russian plane. The U.S. rushed to de-escalate rather than backing Turkey in November, a signal that Erdogan does not have unequivocal NATO support. The provision of military support to the PKK thus offers Russia a surgical option to escalate against Turkey without provoking a response from the U.S. and NATO, especially because U.S. strategy against ISIS relies upon the Syrian Kurdish YPG, which has strong links to the PKK. It is a dangerous possibility that Russia will cultivate its relationship with the PKK in ways that undermine the U.S. and Turkey, even if the recent MANPADS event does not represent this inflection. SYRIA FLASH TODAY :  “ISIS Destroyed Russia Helicopter Division at Important Airbase”

May 24 – BBC REPORT :  The Islamic State has destroyed an entire Russian helicopter division and 20 supply trucks in an attack on the Tiyas (T4) airbase in central Syria, according to a US-based analytic group.

The BBC obtained satellite imagery of the airbase and showed it to an analyst for Stratfor, Sam Tuck: The Islamic State attacked the airbase two weeks ago, as part of an offensive in which it captured two major gas fields in eastern Homs Province. ISIS’s Amaq News Agency said at the time that four Russian attack helicopters and 20 trucks loaded with rockets had been destroyed in a fire set by an Islamic State attack. Pro-regime accounts spoke of an explosion in an ammunition depot. The Tiyas airbase is one of the most important for Syria’s air force. As Russia expanded last autumn’s aerial intervention, it moved helicopters beyond its main airbase in Latakia Province in western Syria to Homs Province and near Qamishli in northeastern Syria. www.mesop.de

MESOP SYRIA COMMENT : The Local Defence Forces – Regime Auxiliary Forces in Aleppo

By Aymenn Jawad Al-Tamimi 24 May 2016 – Besides the well-known National Defence Forces (NDF) that were set up in 2012 with oversight from Iran to act as a counter-insurgency force and auxiliary militia network for the Syrian army, there exists a similarly named but distinct set of militias specific to the Aleppo area known as the Local Defence Forces (Quwat al-Difa’ al-Mahalli- LDF). In brief, the LDF consists of a variety of local militias such as Katibat al-Nayrab al-Maham al-Khasa (The Nayrab Battalion- Special Operations), Liwa al-Baqir (The Baqir Brigade), Fawj al-Safira (The Safira Regiment) and Fawj Nubl wa al-Zahara’ (The Nubl and Zahara’ Regiment). How Ankara and the PKK misread civilians’ reactions to ongoing violence

24 May 2016 – Armed violence is the most used instrument of power for organizations such as the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) to impose their political agendas. But in recent months there have been signs that the PKK is having trouble managing this violence.
